BLAKESLEE AP Ddeaee Reporter Kansas city, Mo., Oct. m The chore of Ironing clothes eventually may be just a bad memory for the housewife. Within 10 yean she- will have SO per cent less ironing to do, according to a forecast made by scientists of the Midwest Research Institute here, ,' New kinds of fabrics, washing machines and detergents will team up' to keep wrinkling at a minimum for most clothes. The next 10 years tfill see an accel eration of the recent trend toward wash 'n' wear shirts, dresses and suits. This look ahead also foresees homes easier to clean, or homes which jiist don't get so dirty, and new ways of preparing and storing foods to ease the task of cooking meals. But no automatic way of bundling the youngsters into bulky winter clothing is on the horizon as yet. Research Center The forecasts come from Wil liam W. Niven Jr., manager of the chemical engineering division, and Mrs. Ethel J. Russell, head of the home economics section of j the institute, a nonprofit, inde-1 dependent research center. They and their associates are thinking about unmet needs of homemakers that could be solved ! by new ideas and research. Some! will be suggested to firms which 1 might want to develop the new : products and ideas. ; You can expect more dchy-1 drated foods, including tasty j steaks and seafoods. All you'll do is add the water removed in the processing. Dehydrated foods will be easy to keep without refriger ation or bulky packaging. Army researchers have developed de hydrated steaks which rival nat ural steaks in flavor. Atomic Sterilization Some foods can be sterilized b atomic rays for easy long-life storage. Midwest Research Insti tute scientists are seeking meth ods of preventing unnatural changes in flavor produced in cer tain foods by such radiation steri lization.
