sive campaigns, nearly 30 per
cent of the 270 million people liv
ing in the danger zone, have re
ceived a reasonable degree of im
munity, and similar progress has
been reported in all other malaria
areas.

An alarming picture began tak
ing shape. But Dr. Fox. a cau
tious man, wanted to be sure be
fore announcing his dread diag
nosis.
He extracted specimens from
swollen lymph glands in the groin
and examined smears microscop
ically. These confirmed the suspicion:
Bubonic plague one of the
most fearsome diseases in all man

ty in this country.

Dramatic Search
While the hospital was using ev
ery method known to medical sci
ence to break the disease's hold
on Sakacs, California health au
thorities launched a quick and
dramatic search for the - plague
source.
Word of the case had sent pan
ic through Sakacs' hometown of
EI Rio, a small Southern Califor
nia city near Oxnard in Ventura
County.
Mothers kept their children In
doors, checked .them for feverish
symptoms. Rat hunts" 'were or
ganized and platoons of trapbait
ers went to work.
Mention of plague evoked shud
dering tales of the "Black Death"
that swept through Europe in the
14th Century, leaving 2S million
dead.
But plague had been consigned
to virtual extinction in this coun
try by high standards of sanitation.
