'Telephone' Fishing Bane To Southland By DION HENDERSON Associate Press Staff Writer Fishermen most anywhere can get a fish on the line with the blessing of authorities as long at they don't place " the call on an old-fashioned telephone. Telephoning ' fish' is a well-understood phrase in Dixie, but it's liable to confuse the Yankee an gler. Do you maybe stop in at the drug store phone booth, drop in your dime and tell the opera tor, "Let me ipeak to black bass 4 pound 11 ounces?", No, you don't. Telephoning fish is a method' of using old-time magneto telephones as portable electrical generators to stun fish wholesale in handy pools, and it's against the law just about everywhere. Southern rulhorilies wish the notable North ern lack of interest In the system were nationwide. Little Sport But it Isn't. Some Southern stales find that the number of ar rests under the terse head "tele phoning" may make up half their total fishing violations. There is practically no sport at all in the mass electrocution of a washtub full of catfish, but there appar- ently is some lure in trying to outwit the warden. For Instance, an alert store keeper in one Southern city where there was a recent surge of inter est in the practice made a busj ness coup by cornering the local market on aid telephone sets. He . was doing fine, too, until he ad vertised them in a newspaper. The price of such competition can be high, although it usually isn't. But a recent Texas case has become practically a cause celebre in the. Lone Star state, first because it started out with a private cititea's complaint and second because in the course of furious developments one of the transgressors was shot in the back or thereabouts, by a special dep uty. But the ordinary penally for be ing caught in the act in Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and other re ' gional centers of the "sport" is ; a fine of f 100 or less, and usually : considerably less. - Simple Mechanics The mechanics of telephoning art simple. The old magneto tele phones became popular, and lent I heir name to the operation, be cause Ihey are readily portable. The idea is to set up an electrical field between two electrodes placed in the water. The elec trodes lengths of chain, usually render, fish between them numb.- It may kill, but usually ' not. This, obviously, payi off to ne farious operators only when fish can be found congregating as over the spawning beds in spring, or in deep pools during hot weath er, or when schooled up in lakes The method is not adaptable to all waters, by a long shot, which is probably just as well for har ried wardens.
