The hinge ahead snapped off three-week reaction that had started when the market was near record high levels. Wide gains in prices were as cribed by brokers to ; buyers anxious to add to their holdings at the unusually low prices brought on by the sharp reaction. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was up t3 30 at $178 50, greatest gam since Sept. S, 1931. That was when Hitler was marching through Poland at the outset of World War II. Gauged against the average, the quoted value of securities list ed on the New York Stock ex change gained an estimated four billion dollars. During the reac tion, an estimated It billion dol lars was lost from the quoted val ue? There were 2.430.000 shares traded as against 2.780 shares Monday when the market was lower. The list was composed of 1,160 individual issues. There were 167 gainers and 121 losers with 3 at new highs for the year and 56 at new lows. With the average up 13.30. the industrial component added $4 90, railroads were up $3.30, and util ities gained 60 cents.
