(what they were to do before they ' , Valley Cerrttpeadeat : I entered their new classes in either DALLAS What would you think tho Morrlion or Lyle pammar if m visited vatsr irimnui achool acbooli in Dallas or the Dallai and found that almost every room had sot one, but two teachers? In this day of teacher sbortaet it might be hard ta believe. However, that Is Just what I found, when, as a Statesman valley correspondent, I recently visited tho Morriaoa School la Dallas. Regular teachers art no more abundant at Morrison Scbol than anywhere else, but the regular teachers are assisted by "cadet teachers'' who art high school stu dents, interested in teaching. Started This Sarla The cadet teaching program started hi Dallas wtiem torn high school senior girls, who had heard about tho Salem cadet teaching program, talked tha Dallas High School officials into letting them try it. Soon sot hist girls but also soma boyi ware Interested and the . program started this spring with U high school seniors. Tho seniors were approved by tha hifih school officials as being in good standing, having good Ch leuhip records, better than ever ago scholarship, and being willing to give soma trot time for neces sary conferences. Aa Boar A Day They were thoroughly briefed. In Junior High School Each was to spend an hour a day in his special class room. At first they were only to watch and see how things were done.. , :v Later, as tha regular teachers felt they were ready, they were to correct papers, help individual stu dents, read to the class, and then, only when they were thoroughly used to tha children and the meth ods used, were they to tska charge of a whole room completely. Soma of the teachers were a little apprehensive at the thought of having a high Khool student assisting." but their apprehen sions were' soon gone when they At the Lyle School the principal said that the teachers were en joying the cadets and the cadets seemed to be getting a good deal out of the practice also. At tho junior high Khool the teacher of band has a cade' who was formerly his student. The band trscher believes that his csdet it developing excellent leadership qualities which were not noticeable while tha boy was only a , student. Receive Credits Besides the experience of teach ing Khool and seeing if they be lieve that teaching is the right profession for them to follow, these seniors also receive regular high Khool credits for cadet teaching. AD seem to be enjoying the work and some find that they are even found how useful these seniors 'more interested in teaching than were. . Prepare linm - It wasn t long before a teacher of tha first grade was able to pre pare for future lessons while her capabla "cadet read to tha class. A third grada teacher was. blej heartily recommend iU ta have aa extra reading clans be cause her cadet helped by hearing a group or children read. A fifth grade teacher said she didn't re alise how' much help her cadet was until he was absent from Khool one day and she found out how much she missed him. they were before the program started. This seems to be an excellent method of introducing young people to the teaching profession, and all connected with the Dallas program The cadet teachers of Dallas In dude Maydene Curtiss, Arlene Ton kin.
