Shakespeare Had Bourgeois Background, Malcnkov Told By COLIN FB0ST . ... . STRATFORD ON AVON, Eng land LfV Georgi M. Malenkov came to Shakespeare'i birthplace Tuesday and was told the Bard of Avon was a bourgeois boy without the slightest hint of proletarian background. The news didn't seem to disturb the smiling former Soviet pre mier. Malenkov, who was deposed last year as premier and now is minis ter of power stations, is in Britain on a three week tour of power and electrical installations. He made a visit to Stratford on his way from London to a big elec trical engineering works in the English industrial midlands. Malenkov was shown around Stratford by Mayor Dudley Wood man. First stop was the house where the poet was born. There Levi Fox, director of the Shakespeare birth place trust, told Malenkov: ' i "As you see from the house, Shakespeare had a middle class upbringing. His father, John Shakespeare, was a prosperous tradesman and the Shakespeares lived well by the standards of their times." - r Malenkov told Fox he was very happy to look over this literary shrine. Newsmen pressed him to say which Shakespeare play he liked most, but all he would say was: ; "They we all good." Shakespeare's works are popular in the Soviet Union and several have been made into films there. It takes an aversee 34 man hours to produce 100 bushels of com compared with 127 man hours in 1930. r u CRANE SERVICE CO. France in Search for 'Liberal Solution1 to Algeria Rovo! By SEYM 0VK TOPPING PARIS UP The United States Tuesday pledged its sole support to France in the search for a "lib eral and equitable solution" to the nationalist uprising in Algeria. U. S. Ambassador C. Douglas Dillon condemned the rebel cam paign of violence in the strategic North African territory. He de clared: "The United States stands solid ly behind France in the search for a liberal and equitable solution of the problems in Algeria." In an address prepared for de livery to the French Diplomatic Press Assn., the American envoy strongly rejected any idea of a rift between the United States and France over North African policy. He, in effect, replied to French col onists in North Africa who have accused the United States of en couraging the Arab nationalists. Two weeks ago a mob of French colonials wrecked the American consulate and information offices in Tunis. At the same time he appeared to be trying to avoid offending the sensitive Arab world. He stressed that U.S. backing of France hinges on her following a liberal policy toward the national ist sentiments of the North Afri cans. This was apparently aimed at warding off any ( Arab accusations that the United'States is backing colonialism. VJ Speaking in French, Dillon said: "The French government has proposed (for Algeria) a liberal program, the basic element of which is a search for new arrange ments for the continued coexis tence of the French and Moslem communities. . . "The French government has solemnly promised free elections for the purpose of choosing these leaders. Such elections are wholly consistent with the ideals of liberty and justice which are held so dear by both the French and American people." Dillon added elctions cannot take place "while disorder reigns." He said Americans "have always been shocked by blind acts of terror ism, and those who take part in such activity should not for a mo ment imagine that they have the support of my government or any segment of our public opinion." Officials said the speech was ap proved in advance by President Eisenhower's administration. Apparently referring to charges that Egypt and the Kremlin have been fostering the Moslem revolt in North Africa, Dillon said: "We recognize that there have been external influences at work trying to undermine the French position throughout North Africa. "I hope that what I have just said will be of help in enabling the people of France to differentiate sharply between her friends and her foes, between the friends and allis who support her in her search tor liberal and fair solu tions, and those who have sought to destroy every possibility of a continuing relationship between France and the Moslem commun ities throughout North Africa." BOBBER FINDS LIFE TOUCH ATAMI, Japan -Police hero report a 25-year-old train robber has promised to go straight when he finishes hospital and jail terms.
