Tlans for "project explorer" Policeman Credited With Rescue of 12 CHICAGO Ur- Policeman James Ross was credited with rescuing 12 persons, including seven children and an elderly crippled and blind man, from a burning apartment building on the Vest Side Monday. Ross, 29, was passing the build ing en route to his traffic post When he saw two small boys car rying an undressed Infant. He questioned them about the infant and they pointed to a building, laying, "There! a fire in there." Ross ran into the smoke-filled building and found four small boys huddled in the hallway. He carried two and pushed the other two to Force officers associated with high altitude, high speed bailout experi ments. , The officers reported that Lt. Henry P. Nielsen, 31, co-holder of the unofficial record for high alti tude parachute jumps, will lead the new attempts. Nielsen and one other airman would make the jumps, using recently developed automatic operating parachutes and other experimental equipment. Taking part in the newt confer ence were Nielsen, Col. Arthur Henderson, assistant chief of the Aero Medical Laboratory, Dayton, Ohio, and Capt. Edward G. Sperry of the Air Research and Develop ment Command, Baltimore. To Develop Equipment Henderson said the purpose of the planned jumps is to develop safe equipment and procedures for bailing out of fast planes at alti tudes up to 90.000 feet. His companion will ride the gondola down to about 20,000 feet and bail out. On the next balloon ride, the companion will bail out at about 76.000 feet and Nielsen will ride the balloon down for a medium alti tude bailout. On the third try, Nielsen plans to step out into space at about 90,000 feet. He said he did not believe they could go higher until they are provided with bigger or less weighty balloons. NEW YORK iff A throng of theater and broadcasting lumin aries jammed St. Malachy's Church Tuesday for the funeral of Fred Allen. Police estimated that 1,200 per sons, including many standees, crowded within the church on 49th Street near Broadway. It is known as "the actors' church." Another 700 persons massed behind police lines out front. A high requiem mass was of fered for the renowned comedian by the Right Rev. Msgr. James B. O'Reilly, pastor. There was no eul ogy, but a prayer was offered that Allen would "attain eternal' rest and happiness." Allen's widow, Portland Hoffa, was escorted by Jack Haley, one of the honorary pallbearers. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery- in suburban Westchester County at a later date. Vesterday's severe snow storm made immediate opening of the grave impossible. Jack son D-W'ash said Tuesday he will press for a "realistic full test" to determine which of the various ground-to-air defense missiles is most effective. Jackson, a member of the sen- ale armed services committee, said such a test is "absolutely es sential in view of the hundreds of millions of dollars that have gone into these programs." He raised the issue at a hearing in which James H. Douglas, Under-Secretary of the air force, tes tified before a senate armed serv ices subcommittee. Jackson said the comparative capabilities of the Nike 'and Talos defense missile systems must be shown "before further millions are pumped into either program."
