The reason is that coffee is supposed to outrank tea even at tea parties and the opportunity to pour it at local shindigs in re served for those ladiea whose huv bands outrank others according to political and diplomatic protocol. Some ladies get pouty when they are assigned to the orange pekoe, when they think they should pre side over the Java. - Tap-Ranking Guest Pair v This has become quite the head ache for some hostesses. Not only must they not seat an ambasa dor's wife at the tea end alter in . vttlng a senator's wife to pour the coffee, they must be sure to ulc the leaders among the top-ranking guests to pour first as the party gets underway. . Thus, before planning a party, hostesses must study the official table of precedence of who out ranks whom set up the State De partment's Division of Protocol. All official hostes'ses must do this in planning a dinner, or a recep tion. Mrs. Mxta Pturs First t According to the official table, an ambassador's wife outranks even the wife of the secretary of state, who in turn top the wives; of members of Congress.
