Spit, Polish9 Drive Begins By Army Chief WASHINGTON UH The Army chief of staff has started a spit and polish campaign to spruce up appearance of officers and men in the Washington area. Barbers, tailors and cleaners are getting a lot more work as a result. Although the order was directed specifically to the capital area, of ficials surmised the word would rapidly spread to commands throughout the country. ' Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, the Army chief of staff, made his de sires known in a memorandum. He called on all soldiers to "ex emplify the highest standards of appearance, military bearing and alertness." An immaculate dresser himself. he laid stress on the fitting and press of uniforms, the "placing and polishing of insignia" and haircuts. So military police have been stationed at vantage points such as entrances to the Pentagon to give soldiers the once over. One enlisted man reported he had been told his jacket didn't fit.
