Wilson Succumbs to Long Illness : Billy Earl Wilson, resident of Salem for about 10 years, died Thursday at a Salem hospital as a result of a heart ailment. He had been ailing for some time and was .hospitalized about a week ago. Employed as a salesman at the Bishop clothing store for several years, Wilson had made his home at 251 S. Cottage St. He was born Dec. 16. 18S8, at Pittsburgh, Pa. . Only survivor is the widow, Mrs. Mary Wilson, Salem. (Statesman Photo) Thieves Raid Salem Firms, Gain Nothing Two Salem business firms were burglarized early Thursday morn ing but the culprits apparently net ted not a single penny, according to city police, Entered were the Salem Con Crete Pipe & Products Co., 2990 Portland Rd., and the Wiltsey Mu sic Co.. I860. State St. Detectives said offices in both establishments were ransacked and an ..attempt apparently was mad,e to carry away a safe at the pipe firm. The safe reportedly had been moved several feet but the burglars pre sumably gave up because of its weight . Gerald E. Bull, 1380 N. 18th St., operator of the pipe business, told police the thieves overlooked sever al dollars in a money tray. .The burglary was discovered about 2:30 a.m. when an officer noticed a front door ajar. The Traffic Safety Council will meet at 2 p.m. today with Chair man lieroert carter to plan a safety poster campaign and to start work pn national traffic safety observances in November. Meanwhile, Mayor Robert F. White reminded Thursday that traffic isn't the only area of safety needed to protect Salem's children. Calling attention to National Child Accident Preven tion Week, Oct 23-29, the mayor urged citizens to cultivate care ful habits at home as well as on streets "and highways. : Accidents of all kinds kill 17,- 000 boys and girls each year in this country, he said. . .J la rest u-.towJ t ..at ..mmwi" r" . . itM"" Morrow-Wins Contract for Bank Project Establishment of quarters . for Salem's new Western Security Bank is slated to start this week under contractor Robert D. Mor row, who was given the go-ahead order Thursday. Morrow, lowest of four bidders at $42,331, was officially awarded the contract Thursday at a meeting of the bank's building committee. The contract calls for remodel ing of the business building at South Commercial and Candalaria streets, which will house the bank. The project is a joint one between the bank and Grabenhorst Bros, and will include a 24-foot addition to the west side of the one-story building. The bank is slated to open Jan. 3, 1956. Exchange Club Starts Yule T Toys Drive Salem Exchange Club's seventh annual campaign for Christmas toys for needy children got under way this week, according to Chairman Frank Ward. The public is urged to contrib ute good, usable toys. Toys in need of repair should rot be brought in, said Ward, because the Exchange Club has no facility for repairing them. Toys may be left with Ward at Salem Auto Parts store, 356 N. Liberty St Phone cells to 3-9108 or to 4-5343 will enable Ward to pick up toys which contributors cannot bring to the store. This is the only toy drive in Salem this, year, said Ward "We earnestly ask the coopera tion of Salem residents in . this project. Prison Inmate Asks Release Francis M. Mitchell, serving a five-year sentence from .Klarrtath County in Oregon State Prison for obtaining money and prop erty by false pretenses, filed a writ of habeas corpus, in Marion County Circuit Court Thursday naming Warden Clarence T. Gladden as defendant Mitchell, who began his sent ence at the state prison Aug. 19, 1934, contends the judge who sentenced him had no jurisdic tion in the case. He sought a hearing before Circuit Judge George R. Duncan and release from the penitentiary. Charges of another convict, Walter Lee Mauiin, that he is being held illegally were denied in a demurrer filed in the court Thursday by Warden Gladden. Governor Plans Duck Hunting Trip Gov. Paul L. Patterson and party of friends are planning to spend Saturday in the Prineville area hunting ducks. The governor recently spent two days in the Prineville area hunting oeer.
