Weed Howard," 54, for . several .years head of - the State Police' arson squad... died .unex pectedly hi an Albany hospital ' early Tuesday following a ' heart attack.. He was born in Canby June 30, 1901, and attended . the ; public schools there. Howard was employed by Union county and the city of-La Grande and later became associated with the old State Traffic Department under the secretary of state in 1927. He served In the latter capa city until creation of the State Police Department in August, 1931; when he was assigned to - patrol work. , V ;. v- He served as a patrolman in the Medford- and Eugene areas for several years . before, his assign ment with the arson squad. During the past several years he has made his headquarters at the State Police Division at Milwaukie. Howard was a veteran of World War L V Surviving are his widow, Dorothy Howard; a son, Donald, and two daughters, Janet and Patricia, all of Portland. A brother and lister also survive, i ' . Both H. G. Maison, Superinten dent of state police, and Lee Bown, Assistant State Police Superinten dent, spoke ; highly of Howards ability and service as an arson in vestigator. They said Howard was well - known throughout the state where he conducted many arson investigations. Jury Acquits Bartender Loren P. Rolie, Salem bar- tender, was found innocent Tues day of a. charge of serving ana gelling ; liquor to a minor. He was acquitted by, a Circuit Court jury which heard the case before Judge Joseph E- Feltoa. r RdliVlhad - been - charged in June byi an agent, of the liquor Control Commission. Salem to Hear Famed Africa Missionary; Salem Girl's Guardian f . - $100,000 Suit A $100,000 damage suit jwas filed Tuesday in Marion County Circuit Court by the guardian of a Salem girl who-was injured ma: car pedestrian accident last year. The suit was filed) by Walter Rak, father of P.ose Rak, against Gifford and Henry Van Loh, driv er and owner of the car involved. Both are charged with negligence. The complaint statesj the driver was not keeping a proper lookout, was driving too fast, and could have avoided striking the girl. -The girl, the complaint states, was unconscious for 10 months. Al leged injuries have caused her great physical pain and mental anguish, Rak contends, j She has been confined to bed since the date of the accident.
