Heat Beating

Southern California took another
beating from the heat Tuesday.
Residents ot the Los Angeles re
gion were resigned to their sev
enth day in a row of temperatures
of ;00 or higher, Burba nk had a
lunchtime reading of 102.
The temperature hit 102 in Los
Angeles at 2:27 p.m., toppling a
64-year-old -record for the date. A
reading of 104 was forecast for
Wednesday.
The coroner's office in Los An
geles attributed S3 deaths directly
to the heat marathon.
Crop damage was estimated in
the millions. ' ;
Six forest fires burned out of
control after blackening more than
50,000 acres of timber and cut-over
land in Northern and Central Cali-
fornia. s
It was hot. too, in Utah, Nevada,
Kansas, Oklahoma, the interior
sections of the gulf states and
other parts of the southern half
of the country.
