Ohio tf The na tion's lawmakers are so busy tak ing care of the country they often fail to take care -of themselves, says Dr. R. W. G if ford, assistant attending physician' to Congress. . He terms life in Cosgress a "pro cess of natural selection" with vot ers retiring lawmakers who be come senile or lose their ability and drive. He says congressmen have hard, tough jobs, physically and mentally. "Our biggest problem is to get them to take care of themselves," be says. He cites long, tiring ses sions of Congress as conducive to heart ailments. Overweight is a major problem; there are too many banquets they eat on the run, and their habits are irregular." And, be adds, congressmen gen erally are reluctant to admit they are under medical care. He says many, of them won't even admit they're on a diet. , Dr. Gifford spoke during a visit here. I not only was- f t n't kidding, I 5 didn't know the half of k. Poor old McCleery doesn't even have a title any more. It just so happens that a local Los Angeles radio station and a CBS station at that has a quiet little afternoon show called, of all things, -Matinee." The NBC lawyers forgot to check this point. The CBS lawyers didn't The CBS lawyers sent a polite note to the NBC lawyers. Result: McCleery has to come up with a new title, thus washing out all the nice publicity that has been building up for the show as "Ma tinee." IH give him a title free of charge: "The Ulcer Hour." (Note: He didn't accept it. New title, which reflects a tre mendcus amount of creative im agination on someone's part, will be "NBC Matinee Theater." A master stroke." In three magic words it identifies the network, makes the point that it will be an afternoon show and then bril liantly drives the point home with the word "theater." People get paid $20,000 a year for thinking up titles like that). TV commercials, like all ad vertising, are part and parcel of the American way of life. Some times, of course, they can be bor ing, irritating or even in bad taste. So can a lot of other things like some of the shows them selves. ', STARDUST: The u n h a p p y truth of the matter is that Judy Garland is fat and there are no two ways about it She has until Sept 24 to bring her weight down before making her widely heralded TV bow.
