State to Study Contracts for Girls' School Awarding of a contract for re modeling the security Dunamg ai Hillcrest School for Girls probably vill be considered at a meeting cf the State Board of Control here Tuesday, officials said Saturday. Eleven teen-age inmates re cently staged a riot in the, struc ture, causing considerable damage. The remodeling operations were estimated to cost approximately 177,500, in a statement filed with the Board of Control last week. Girbl involved in the riot are be ing housed in the Oregon State Hospital pending completion of the remodeling operations. Included m the proposed re modeling operations are installa tion of nwe. locks on the security building doors, erection of a cyclone fence around part of the building are strengthening of the partitions and walls. During the riot the girls tore holes in the walls, wrecked elec trical fixtures and radiator ac cessories, and flooded the floor of the "treatment ward" with water. Eight other girls who staged a subsequent disturbance at the school are housed in the Marion County jail. Accident Unit Lists 6 Fatals Six fatalities werereported to the State Industrial Accident Commission during, the week ending Aug. 18. The report in cluded 1716 industrial accidents and 24 claims for occupational diseases. Fatalities included John L. Stafford, Tiller, stacker operator; Elby Mitchell, Chehalis, Wash., bucker; William B. Hicks, Yam hill, choker setter: Rdy M. Den ny, Klamath Falls, electrician; Willie Sell, Myrtle Point, loader, and "Ben G. Woelke, Toledo, for est protection man. SP to Merge 2 Departments The Southern Pacific Co. has an nounced it will consolidate its pub lic relations and passenger traffic departments 'into one department effective Sep. 1. D. J. Russell, president of the railroad, said merger of the de partments is designed to give greater emphasis to the company's public relations effort. Claude E. Peterson, veteran official, will be in charge of the combined de partments. , Bernal S. Quayle, Portland, gen eral passenger agent, will be pro moted to manager of the merged departments in his territory. . Former Salem Woman Dies Mrs. Kathryn B. Tyler. 43, daughter of John B. Hileman of 756 Mill St.. died Friday at her Portland home. At one time she had lived in Salem. She was a registered nurse. Mrs. Tyler was born June 17, 1912 at Yakima. She leaves two daughters. Susan K. and Patricia Jean Tyler of Portland and her father. Arrangements are in charge of the Clough-Barrick funeral home. INCONSIDERATE SPOKANE, Wash. Mrs. R. B. Gagnon & Family Heart Attack Kills Former Salem Man Final rites for George Dale Lakin, 57, former Salem and Dalllas resident, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Prineville Mortuary. Lakin died of a heart attack at Milton-Freewater where he lived Formerly he was a shovel oper ator for the city street department in Salem. Born Dec. 3, 1898, at Caly Cen tre, Kans., the deceased came to Oregon about 20 years ago. Survivors include the widow, Oma, at Milton-Freewater; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Davey, Salem; and a son, Onn Lakin, Prineville;. also four brothers and three sisters in the Midwest and five grandchildren. Interment will be at Prineville. Dr. Brooks to Attend Hawaii Church Meet Dr. Dean K. Brooks will attend the general convention in Hawaii of the Episcopal Church as one of the four lay delegates from the Oregon diocese, it was announced Saturday. Dr. Brooks is superintendent of the Oregon State Hospital and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Salem. Accompanying Dr. Brooks will be bis wife and five members of St. Paul's who will attend the convention as visitors. They are Mrs. William H. Lytle. Misses Marjqrie Harris and Eliza beth Porter; Mr. and Mrs. Paul M. Gemmell. The convention wiH be held from Sept. ,4 to 15 in Honolulu. Dt Brooks was selected as a delegate at the annual Oregon diocesan con vention of the Episcopal Church at Medford earlier this year. YM to Resume Dance Class Beginners square dance classes will resume at the Salem YMCA on Sept 14, k was announced Sat urday. A nominal charge is, made for the classes, which teach funda mentals of both square and round dancing. The course will continue for about 12 weeks, with instruc tion each Wednesday night from 7:30 to 9. Two Injured In Accident Mrs. Jessie Wilhite of Salem Route 5 and daughter Barbara were hospitalized Saturday follow ing a collision on a crossroads near Praturri, state police reported. Salem General Hospital report ed their conditions both as "good." The mother, 33, had two scalp lacerations and the daughter, 16p abrasions and shock. Floyd Edward Wilhite, driver and Mrs. Wilhite's husband, was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign. A truck driver involved in the collision was listed as Richard Miller, Salem Route 6.
