Q. test, cheer up. May be you were sold short. The standard I. Q. test comes a long way from being a good yard stick of adult intelligence, says lr. J. P. Guilford, a psychology pro lessor who has invented many new ays of measuring creativenes iudsment. reasoning power and other elements of mentality. Only a few of the 200 items in the Stanford-Binet test, long-used by psychologists, deal with these abstract but extremely important mental factors, he asserts. Dr. Guilford, who is on the facul ty of the University of Southern California, was the only American psychologist invited to present a paper at a recent conference in Paris on factor analysis. He told nhmit some of his new tests there. The Maniora-uinei tesi was oe-; Mimimmt signed for children. It was sup-;S posed to give investigators an iden 1 of how a given youngster wo,ildjs get along in elementary school. In :f that respect it was, and still is, a It was applied later to adults j - mainly because it was the Den; available instrument for assessing man intelligence. In its original form it was given to several hund red thousand soldiers of World War I. Later the Army's Aloha ' and Beta tests for mentality were used on service personnel. Using the same kind of tests for ; verbal comprehension and reason- j Ing on adults as on children nss j not only short-chansed some of the j subjects but also has limited r.ci- i entific knowledge of what human intelligence really is. Dr. Guilford, ays. Get Alon Well A hi'h I. 0. doesn't necessarily mean a person is or will be a great i creative thinker. Sometimes it has been a parallel to indifferent ca-; reers in later life. - j , At least one experimenter has shown that people with slightly: substandard I. Q. rating?, get; along pretty well in life and rate highly as automobile drivers. i There are at least 40 and per-; haps as many as 60 factors' con- cerned with intellect. Dr. Guilford reports, and the" standard I. Q. test does not begin to disclose them. ! The new tests by Guilford andl his associates are designed to show j up creativity, the powers of de-i duction or logical evaluation, tie ability to discover and become ! aware of important things, and the ; faculty for drawing conclusions and sensing problems. Both Sides . Another elusive thing which Guil- j ford has undertaken to measure is ' one's powers to follow divergent: lines of - thinking that is, being able to see both sides of the matter j without losing the faculty for criti- j cal judgment. " , ; Speed of judgment is another. I These things test a person's flexi-j bility and originality. The 40 to 60 components of in- j telligence fall into about six cafe-' jories, Dr. Guilford says. They, are: - 1. The discovery factor, which deals with awareness. 2. The memory for words, num-. bers, designs. ' 3. The knack of learning and recognizing symbols, involved in arithmetic and reading comprehen sion, i Products of Thinking j 4. The production factor, con cerning one's handling of conclu sions, solutions and other products . jf thinking. 5. The divergent-thinking factor, ' having to do with flexibility and ; originality. j . 6. The evaluaton factor which ; relates to logical assessment of problems and speed of judgment, i . In six years Guilford and his' rolleagues have developed nearly j 200 tests to evaluate the aptitudes of high-level personnel for the Of- j fice of Naval Research. They also ! were given to 3,000 officer candi- dates in the armed services. During World War II. Dr. Guil-: ford was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force's West Coast Replace-i ment Training Center at Santa Ana, Calif. He is a graduate of the Univer sity of Nebraska and Cornell. He taught at Nebraska and the Uni versities of Illinois and Kansas be fore going to USC in 1940.
