We have found the German people very warm an" kind although there are still many who feel bitter. Of course. there are man, Americans who frel the same way. Our stay in Hanover was very enjoyable. We spent most of our tyne shopping. Ttie two most popular items were wrist watches and lederhasen, the native dress for boys and men. They are short leather pants. Almost every boy in the delegation now has leder hasen. v T HaiMTer From Hanover' we went by bus to Kassel. one of the hardest hit cities during the last war in Ger many. About 90 per cent of it was destroyed. It has a population of about 300.000. In one night over 40.000 were killed. One of the hardest things to believe about Germany is how fast mey have recovered. In eleven short years Kassel has restored 50 per cent of the 90 per cent destroyed. While in Kassel we were guests st the famous Bundesgastenshan Power show. We were let down in to the park by a chair lift. It dropped us down about 130 feet and took us clear across the park fo we cduld see in both directions. Not being an authority on flowers I missed a lot but it is one of the highlights of the trip. Before leaving Kassel we visited Her culeus castle which was built in The drummer many consider the j 1701-1714. It was one day I will never forget. Vtrld Affairs Our luncheon was spent at a local YMCA where we had the chance to talk to some German boys about our age. We spent a good two hours talking about world affairs, and they showed us a wonderful time I think I have made a friend for life with this young German boy, Ywigen Gier- licks. who like me, Ms another y. tr of high school and also plans tc go into medicine. He is hoping to spend part of his schooling in the United . States. His father was a professor in Germany and he taught for a year at Yale Uni versity, during the last war. Hitler wanted him to go to Moscow to teach, but instead of leaving his family he committed suicide. This is one birthday I will never for get. Dowm Rhine We traveled down the Rhine river where we stopped at Heidel- burg, Germany, at Konstanz where v t were entertained again by the German YMCA at Castle Mainau and took a short trip down into Switzerland. The delegation all hated to leave Germany. We will remember them for their great out-look on life and the hard working people they are. self in '"The Benny Goodman Story." As all jazz addicts know, the chicle is as much a part of Krupa's terrific beat as are his sticks. Krupa has a big part in the mov ie as he did in the original Good man band and he chews the gum both with and without the music, f He participates in 27 dramatic scenes and chews gum in every one of them. j "I key my gum chewing to the scene." says the ageless musician. ; Tast-chewing for the exciting scenes, slow for the more relaxed' stuff." None of the other musicians from the original band, all playing them ! selves, have such scene-stealing j gimmicks as Krupa's. 1 "But." comments Harry James.
