Under the contract which iust expired, actors re ceived no money for the second run, 50 per cent pay at minimum scale (unless otherwise specified in the individual contract) for the third and fourth runs com bined, 25 per cent for the fifth run and 25 per cent pay lor the sixth run. The Screen ; Actors Guild now wants to producers to pay actors for the second run. I It's a matter of principal, say the ' producers. The prin cipal af Be money far the sec ond ran has been established and they insist keeping, it that way. The basic money at stake is $70 a day, minimum scale for an actor in a TV film. Most films take three, days to shoot. If an actor works all three days, he gets $210. For two days, it's $140. Oddly enough, a .number 01 actors are, in effect, striking against themselves. Stars like Desi Arnaz and Lucille sail, George Burns and Grade' Allen, Loretta Young,, Danny Thomas, Jane Wyman and Ozzie and Har riet Nelson produce their own shows and are producers as well as actors. ! It weald be Interesting te bear Danny Thomas arguing with himself the subject. As an actor, he wants mere meney. As a producer, he does et wait te spend it. Can't af ford it, be tells himself. Bat I need it, his other self insists. Haven't got it, says the first half. It's a pretty ridiculous situation. If the strike should last any length of time,' it will be the public, as usual, which will suf fer. Some shows have backlogs of unreleased episodes, but not very many. Most shows have only three or four. Some, includ ing "I Love Lucy," have none. This means that before very long the poor viewer is going to be up to his ears in repeats, the same repeats he has been suffering through all summer. . STARRDUST: It's now an op en secret around Vine Street that Tom D'Andrea is rapidly wrecking his own career with his constant display of tempera ment on "The Soldiers' set The network executives -are getting fed up with his petty beefs, and the network press agents have reached the point where they no longer want to work the show. "The guy is suffering from hallucinations," i one executive said the other day, "and if he keeps it up, bo sponsor is go ing t want to touch the show with a 43-foot pole" . . . Dinah Shore is back : in town after her brief vacation in HawaiL She has a new press agent one of the best in the business, I should add and his plans for her are literally world wide in scope. v Art Linkletter has just signed an important deal with NBC whereby be will appear in no less than 11 spectaculars next season, emceeing two of them and appearing as an actor in the other nine. He's one of the few to be; working on two networks at. the same time, having "House Party" daily on CBS and "People Are Funny" every week on NBC . . . The big money is still in the picture business. "The Robe has grossed no less than $23,000.- 000 to date and. jlikc "Gone With the Wind," will probably go on forever . . . Loretta Young, hospi talized since last 'April, has finally been released and is recuperating at her Ojai home;. . . A new firm Maple Productions, has announced plai-i to make 39 films based on the old L. Frank Baum "Oz" stories, about which, more later. 1 (Copyright 1SS. General features Corp.) Quiet Planes Needed, Air Expert Insists SEATTLE uTvi Public demands for quieter operations of airplanes in the vicinity of airports should not be ignored. Vice Adm. Charles E. Rosendahl, TJSN (Ret.) told 600 aeronautics specialists here. Rosendahl, executive director of the National Air Transport Coor dinating Committee, delivered the warning to airport operators and aircraft manufacturers at the open ing session of the! Institute of Aero nautical Sciences meeting. . The campaign to lessen aircraft noise is one that must be solved by changes in design of aircraft power plants as well as redesigned airport facilities,; Rosendahl said. He said some success has been made on the noise abatement front in the New York-New Jersey are'a where his group has been conduct ing studies. - "Looking over our shoulder are millions of people who feel that nerve shattering noise is simply too high a price to pay for con veniently located air terminals," he said. t 8 KSLM KOCO KOIN KGW KEX Show Tunes Show Tunes Dugout Dope (Baseball Track 1490 Track 1490 .Track: 1490 Track 1490 Sports-Ernie fTenn.
