2 to 3 cents a gallon and also boost
levies on trucks, diesel fuel, and
truck tires and tubes.
These increases would . raise
more than 800 million dollars a

47 billion dollars in federal-state
road building over the next' 12
years. t
Most of the Increased federal
funds about 24 billion dollars
would be spent for completing a
40,000-mile network of interstate
defense highways.

ule of tax increases "looks pretty
fair to me" and would be a "pretty
good spread ol the taxes . . .

highway system."
The committee, however, heard

farm, truck, bus, transit, tire and
other industry groups protest the
proposed taxes as a severe blow
that could drive many firms out
of business.
The committee goes into a closed
session Wednesday to iron out the
issue, with several key members
predicting approval of the tax in
creases. Republicans promised a
fight on the House floor for Eisen
hower's bond proposal, if it is beat
en in the committee.
The Senate voted 60-31 against
the bond plan and adopted instead
a substitute Democratic bill which
provided for a five-year road build
ing program and left financing up
to the House, where all tax bills
must originate.

market ran into late selling Tues
day and slipped back from its best
after a promising start.
The Associated Press average of
60 stocks was down 10 cents at
$175.20. It was ahead $1.30 Monday.
The industrial component lost 70
cents,' railroads were down 10
cents, . while utilities were up 50
cents at a new high since 1931 of
$7450. '
There was an almost even divi
sion between gainers and losers
out of the 1,197 individual issues
traded with 460 up and 474 down.
Fifty-four stocks hit ew highs for
the year and 18 touched new lows.
Volume expanded to 2,630,000
shares from; 2,420,000 shares
traded Monday.
