ALBANY Two days of prelimin
ary logging contests wil be climax
ed Monday in championship events
' during closing hours of the Albany
Timber Carnival.
Crowds jammed the carnival
grounds Sunday to view the log
rolling, bucking, climbing, chop
ping and other contests and events.
A water show will begin at noon
Monday at Waverry Lake, followed
by the championship logging events
at 1:15 pjn. A water show will
start at 7 p.m. and the carnival
will end with a fireworks display
at 9:30 p.m.
Contests and leading competitors
include:
Log-rolling Defending champ
ion Eddie Herron of Kelso, Wash.;
J. Wickheim, Sooke, B.C.; Larry
Cooper and Jim Herron of Long
view, Wash:; Sam Harris and Har
ley Michele of Kelso, and Bob Har
rison of Eureka, Calif.

fending world's champion with time
of 2:06.2 minutes. .
Speed climbing Defending

time of 36.2 seconds which broke
his own previous record of 37.1.

time of 57.10 seconds.
Axe throwing Tied are Gus
Russell, Andy Balmer of Victoria,

Kon Kaelin of Tacoma, Wash.
A special event, the topping of a
100-foot spar, will also take place
Monday. Defending six - year
champion is Harold Jchnson of
Morton, Wash.

weekly Saturday Family isigni pic

Big drawing card was Edward
Syring, former Silverton youth,
who brought an ogran over from
Salem and entertained with music
during the evening. Friends from
the community greeted Syring and
Mrs. Syring.

lect skit by the two brothers, Otto
and Arthur DahL and William Iron,
Silverton High School instructor,
master of ceremonies who enter
taining between numbers with an
"I Saw It in Uie Paper" feature.
Assisting in picnic arrangements
around the park Saturday night
were Tom Cutshall, program di
rector for the Silverton Recreation
Association, which sponsors the
picnics, Knute Digerness, Mr. ana

Plans for next Saturday nights
picnic wil be announced later this
week, Smith said. Sunday.
