Statesman, Salem, Ore., Friday, June 10, 1955 (See. 3-7 Most Churches See No Problem in Lack of Formal Religion at United Nations By FRANCIS W. CARPENTER (Far Georga W. CarmeO ) . UNITED NATIONS. N.Y. Ut. Tea years after the United Nations waj founded to the accompaniment of prayers of millions of people, the problem of religion and prayer in the U.N. still Is a puzzler . The problem has been met part ly by changing rules to open and close General Assembly sessions with a minute of silence and by installing a small meditation room in the assembly building. But some people, mostly Amer icans, still misunderstand and even pass resolutions deploring the lack of prayer in U.N. meetings. Once there was a flood of letters about this. Now -h has trickled to an average, of a letter per week to the UJS. mission and to the U.N. itself.,, The answer is that there are so many religions and faiths repre sented in the U.N it's impossible to agree on any ; prayer or ob servance acceptable to alL Serviag God " The U.S. mission and the U.N. in their replies inform letter writ ers of the minute of silence . and the meditation room. Both say that is as far as the U.N. can go be cause of the variety of beliefs. They make the point that God can be served by works as well as prayer and the work of the U.N. on technical assistance, feeding the hungry and sheltering the home less is a service to God. - The U.S. mission adds a touch to its letter. It expresses the view that God can be served , also by efforts to use atomic energy for peace and by exposing and con demning Communist violations of human rights and - attacks on re ligion. , Are the faithful satisfied with what they have at U.N.? For the most part, their answer is yes. Weyman Huckabee, director of the Laymen's Movement for a Christian World, which was instru mental in getting the meditation room, says: - ' "One thing that does disturb me is that practically no U.N. people use the meditation room." Huckabee said more than 200, 000 persons have signed the guest register kept ia the meditation room since it was opened in 1932. The most distinguished visitor was President Eisenhower, who went there alone before addressing the V J., assembly . Dec. SV 1953, on his program of using atomic en ergy for peace,, . - , Dae for Faee-Lifting r .. The austerely-furnished medita tion room is due for a face-lifting soon to make it larger and give It just a bit more warmth. It con tains only 23 chairs' and a block of mahogany . from. French " Equa torial Africa. ; Dr. Maurice Perlzweig, accredit ed to the U.N. as the official ob server of the World Jewish Con gress and himself a rabbi, said "We see no problem. "As the ;U.N. provides in two striking ways its respect for spiri tual convictions by the. minute of silence and the meditation room it has done all it can reasonably be expected to do without creating new problems," he said. "It includes all kinds of reli gious. Also, you must take into account 'here are people with no religious convictions. The U.N. has shown respect for religious convic tions without doing violence to the convictons of any one group. Dr. Perlzweig, who represents Jewish organizations In 65 coun tries, said he is a strong believer in the separation of church and state. He insisted that principle must be applied to the U.N. and said he would not like to see any "ecclesiastical association between the U.N. and religious, bodies. Satisfaction with the present sys tem also was expressed by a Ro man Catholic priast who is chief delegate of Costa Rica to the U.N. He is Ambassador The Reverend Benjamin Nunez. But he said he is not satisfied with the U.N. Charter, signed at San Francisco 10 years ago on June 26. , "I would like to see the name of God in the charter," , Father Nunez said. "With that name in cluded it would give the charter real value."; , Father Nunez is expected to SckaeferV Antiacid Tablets You May Eat What You tike When You Like 40 TABLETS ONIY 60c SCHAEFER'S DRUG STORE 3 pen Daily. 7:3t a.m. to S p-m.
