French, 82, Succumbs Statesman, Saltm, Ort., Friday, May 13, 1955-Soe. iLe - The first flight by the Wright brothers was 120 feet which is less than the. wing-span of a xnoden airplane. Funeral services for Jesse O. French, 82, who died Wednesday in a Salem hospital, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Virgil T. Golden chapel. Burial will be in Belcrest Memorial Park. French, a retired farmer and cannery worker, lived at 1383 N. 4th St. for the past year and at 1311 S. Winter St before that He was born April 17, 1873 in Illinois and lived in Oregon for the past 48 years. He first arrived In Salem in 1907, then farmed wheat near Lexington in eastern Oregon, re turning to Salem in 1935. He then worked in the canneries, finally retiring in 1948. He had been ill for a few years and entered the hospital a week ago. , t ' French was a member of Leslie Methodist Church. ' Besides his wife Ramona B. French of Salem, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. . Zelle Frances Rickard, Salem, a granddaughter, Frances Juanita Rickard, Salem; three brothers, W. L. French, Santa Monica, Calif., and C. F. and J. G. French, Salem. !iV Unlliri'mnrl 4. Jim 1 . 1 Delays New Process rs new Bill Signing Adoption by the recent legis lature of a. plan .under which enrolled bills were printed in the state printing department rather than typed in the Senate and House engrossed and enrolled bill rooms apparently has slowed down arrival of bills at the gov ernor's office for final signature r veto. I It previously was argued that the new'plan would expedite the all-over bill procedure. Records show that no bills were received at the governor's office "from May 3, one day fol lowing adjournment of the recent legislature, until Tuesday of this week. i The enrolled bills, under the new procedure, after being print ed in the state printing office, are returned to the Senate and House for proof -eading and sig nature of the presiding officers before being sent to the gover nor, i All bills had been received at the governor's office within six days after the close of the 1933 legislature. State finance department direc tor Harry Dorman said there probably would be some saving to the state under the new setup because of retaining bill type for use in printing the legislative Journals. v ; . 5 ,t . Here Gerald Frank, (with megaphone) who will manage the Salem establishment, describes features of the store to the group en one of the parking ramps at the east end of the building. Some 35 department heads made the trip to Salem by bus for the tour, guided by Frank.' Open, lng date for the two-story building is expected to be in late October. (Statesman Photo). Motor Club to Drive to Coast Salem's newly-formed Willanv ette Motor Club will drive to the coast Sunday with Pacific Auto Sports Association, Eugene. Club members and persons interested, in auto sports are invited. 1 The local group will leave from 4S2S S. Pacific Highway at 10 a.m., going to Philomath to meet the Eugene, group and then proceed ing over the Alsea highway to the coast Participants are requested to bring their lunches. Movies will be taken of the trek which will be shown . later over KVAL, Eu gene TV station. Next meeting of the Willamette club will be June 3. Art Display Tuesday at Bush Museum An open house, featuring student art work from three Salem high schools, will be held Tuesday at Bush Museum where the work is currently on display. Students represented are from South Salem and North Salem High Schools, and Sacred Heart Academy Open house will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Display hours are from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Satur day, 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Salem Art Association is coop erating with the schools in the display and open house.
