With "Dragnet now aproach ing the end of its fourth season on TV and sixth on radio, Webb feels that not only the viewer but he himself is ready for a change. The sticker is that the show still has two seasons to go under the present sponsorship, with a total of 55 films still to be made. Jack's problem is to make some sort of change that will be ac ceptable to the sponsor and which at the same time will get him out from under. What he wants to do is -promote Sgt. Friday to Lieutenant and bring a new actor in a Sgt. Thursday, as it were to carry the ball with Ben Alex ander. That would reduce Jack to a minor role in the show, which is what he wants, and he would appear "in perhaps one' out of every three or four episodes al though continuing to serve as producer-director. Webb has felt the same way, mt course, but he also felt there was point In tampering with the. show's format so long as it continued to be such a howling success. He feels bow, however, that the show is aver the hump and that a chaage would be bene ficial rather than harmful. About a year ago. when dum-de-dum-dum was virtually replacing The Star Spangled Banner as' the national anthem. Jack made this cryptic remark to us one hot aft ernoon at the Disney lot where the show is filmed: "Thank heav en," he said fervently, "for Liber ct." , . , ... Liberace; at that time, was Just beginning ta reach his own peak and the publicity aa the . piano player was finally cutting iota the space being devoted ta "Drag- aet." Jack, at the time, was afraid his show would be rua right into the ground and was delighted ta have liberace come along ta take the play away from him. If Webb can convince his spon sor that the public is ready for a new sergeant, he'll get started with "Pete Kelly's Blues" by June, 1956 and that show, of course, is his real baby. He needs the change to keep his remark able enthusiasm at its customary high pitch, and it's no secret that his enthusiasm for "Dragnet" is beginning to wear thin at the edges. "After all," he says, "there are just so many different kinds of crime and we've done every one of them two or three times." What he doesn't say, and what is chiefly remarkable about the show, is that it is his own talent and integrity that has kept "Drag- Bet" from deteriorating long since into routine cops-and-robbers af fair. With almost any other man at the helm, "Dragnet" would have dropped out of the top five I TT1 r snows iwo years ago. sua rare brand of talent, and we are not speaking of him as aa actor, is hardly of the dime-a-dozea vari ety.
