Valley News Statesman News Service Girls Top Silver ton Grads Extension Unit Holds Election Statesauui Newt Service ! w HAYESVILLE The Home Ex tension unit held its annual elec tion of officers this week at the hon of Mrs. Herschel Robertson on Blossom Drive. Mrs. Ed Zahara now beads the group as chair man while Mrs. A. C Thomas is vice-chairman. Mrs. Charles Love will be -secretary and treasurer. The group held an all-day meet ing with the county extension agent, Mrs. Ermine Fisher, pre senting the project lesson "De sign for the Home." Mrs. Jack Bartlett, county committe wo man for the extension units, also spoke on phases of her work. A letter about Alaska from Mrs Rose Cowles of Katella, Alaska, was read to the group. A gift was presented to Mrs. Harvey Christen son. Two guests fro mthe Keizer units were present, Mrs. Earl Weathers and Mrs. M. J. Way. J 70 Seniors Await Diplomas at Silverton Union High School . Statesman News Service jj ' SILVERTON-Seventy students will 'receive diplomas at the first Silverton Union High School com mencement program June 1 at 8 p. m. in the school gymnasium. There will be 16 seniors gradu ating from other high schools as tuition students, because of the change to a Union High school district the past year. District board 7J approved for this year only that those students be per mitted to graduate from the school they had attended previous to the organization of the new district f Next year's senior class will con sist of approximately 100 students, Twila Gillis and Marjorie Wilson are valedictorian and salutatorian. Ranking third, scholastically, in the graduating class is another girl Sharon Wells. Others listed in the top 10 group are Ray Kaser, Dolores Kaufman, Joann Moore, Sharon Beats, Ron ald Jorgenson, Ila Mae Moore and Duane Wilson. Miss Gillis plans to major in political science at college. Miss Wilson plans to become a secre tary. . Baccalaureate services will be held Sunday, May 29, at the school gymnasium with the Rev. L Wilson. 61, Hubbard, Dies at Home Statesman News Service HUBBARD James L. Wilson a former master of Ma pie wood Grange, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Thursday at his home two miles west, of Hubbard. He was 61. . Wilson came to Oregon in 1920 and had lived in the Hubbard dis trict for 25 years. He was born May 12, 1893, at Jonesburg, Mo. I The deceased was a member of the Christian Church, a veteran of World War T, a member of Au rora Legion Post, Donald Lodge 166, AF & AM and the Order of Eastern Star. : Surviving are his wife, May, Hubbard; a daughter, Dorothy Barrett, Hubbard; a brother. Silverton Employs Payne to Design ' New Junior High Corn Brings Good Demand CHICAGO A good demand for corn futures helped strengthen an otherwise weakened market on the Board of Trade Friday, Wheat closed cent higher to V lower, corn Vm to 1 cent higher, oats V higher to V lower, and rye higher. Soybeans were un evenly V lower to 1 cent higher and lard was 12 cents higher to 5 cents a hundred pounds lower. The Department of Agriculture estimated there were 12 per cent more cattle and calves on feed April 1 than a year earlier. This stimulated demand for corn. The market had many gains of 1 to 2 points and some running on higher. Losses as a general rule were small. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was up $1.00 at $164.80, its highest level. New peaks also were scored by the average's com ponents. Industrials were up $1.40 at. a record high of $222.50, rails were ahead $1.20 at a new high since 1929 of $134.30, and the util ities were up 30 cents at a new high since 1931 of $164.80. There were 1.232 individual is sues traded of which 636 advanced and 340 declined with 117 new highs and 8 new lows for the year registered.
