Throngs of pilgrims and tourists jamming Rome for Easter trooped to the: services at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, St. Paul's outside the walls, and the Lateran. , -The greatest basilica, St. Pet er's, was in readiness for the Eas ter address later in the day by Pope, Pius XII. It will be the third address in eight days for the 79- year-old pontiff, whose illness last year caused fears for his life. Sunday, as a year ago, his speech was expected to be a plea for peace. The clamor of bronze bells of Rome's nearly 500 churches pealed out the celebration of Christ's tri umph over the grave, and the end of 40 days of Lent. ( f you asked any boy or girl of this picturesque English-German town Saturday night about the Easter rabbit, tbey's point to the numerous fires' winking on nearby hills. . .. i The children know because their parents have told them that Saturday night the Easter rabbit will dye thousands of multihued eggs in huge cauldrons over the fires. " While the children sleep, the Easter rabbit will come down into the streets and leave eggs on ev ery front porch where the children have fixed nests of wildlowers for the Easter bunny. The parents told the children the story because it had been told them when they were children. For 108 years the bonfires have burned in the Fredericksburg hills on Easter Eve. They are a remind er of a peace pledge the German colonists and the Indians made in 1847 and never broke. The tale is supposed to have started when a pioneer mother quieted her fretting children by telling them that nearby Indian signal fires were just the fires built by the Easter rabbit. Down through generations the fires have become more than folk' lore. They are now a part of rever ent observance of Easter Sunday. A heavy mist hung over the little hill country city Saturday and threatened to postpone the sched uled elaborate historical pageant with a cast of 400: An outdoor amphitheater is the only place large enough to accommodate the cast and the crowds that have to taled up 12,000. The pageant was presented as scheduled but only about 2,000 sa through a drizzling rain to watch the performance. The clammy weather did not stop the men and older boys from setting the Easter fires Saturday night. Drums of crude oil were hauled to the hills to be sure the sodden logs and branches would burn bright. Often Lee and I spend as much time with one of the boys at their classes, helping them with projects or just being proud parents, as we spend being members of the adult congregation. Pleasurable Duty As parents we feel that exposing our children to the organized learn ing of religion is one of our most valuable and ' pleasurable duties. Lessons about good and happy liv ing are learned without pain when we are young. ' At first, when Phillip, and later eter and Paul, attended Sunday School, J just acted as a shepherd to my sons, giving there a sense of security in a strange place. Then- l became interested In teaching. Phillip graduated to kindergarten, but I remained in nursery school, guiding the chil- arens lirst meetings with the thought of God. Eventually. taught Sunday School at all grade levels. For a while, Lee and I conduct ed a seminar for high school agers on Sunday nights. The first . few imes I found the attendance was perfect. However, the reason wasn't i religion. They all wanted to find out how it felt to, be, a movie star. Like Dessert First Always, 4with children, I have found they like their dessert be fore their vegetable. So, I gave hem dessert. Compromising. I talked about glamor and Holly. wood for the first part of the eve ning. Then we indulged in a good old-fashioned discussjpn about the meaning oi (od, and now to apply his ways More parents should take advan tage of this opportunity. Too many blithely drop their darlings off at Sunday School,-and go back home to the Sunday papers. ' Kids are imitators. And guess whom they ape? If mother or dad think Sunday School isn'JL important to attend, it discredits the idea for their children. The understanding and thought that goes into a Sunday School course came as a wonderful revela tion to me. Since the subject of God baffles grown-ups, imagine explaining the concepts to tikes? I was taught bow to make it easy. Orange Used as Example With their first instruction my baby-talking students learned to associate God with everything pret ty, pleasant and simple.. An orange plucked from a tree was the best example of God's way in nature. A parent's kiss of approval brought the meaning of spirit closer to their experience. Struggling for better and clear er examples their young minds could grasp, my own personal search for the basic values was stimulated. I never left a class without feeling refreshed and re newed emotionally.
