Aplet. a Salem power shovel operator, Mrs. Aplet lived at 1830 Childs Ave., iSalenl, for many of her some 30 years here. She was active m the Salem Garden Club. Mrs. Aplet was born March 15, 1897 near Oregon City, went to school, at Canby and, before her marriage, taughf school at Canby and near Lyons for several years. Upon her marriage she moved to Salem, leaving here for Eugene when her son Lowell J. Aplet en tered the University of Oregon. Besides her son, now in the Army at Ft McArthur, Calif., she leaves two sisters, Mrs. Anna Brown, Sweet Home, and Mrs. Katherine Hitchman, Warrenton; brothers Jack W. Hein, Portland, Corwin E. It is possible .a vote on the merger will be taken at the meet ing, said Virgil Pade, first vice president of the East Salem unit, Monday. Each group numbers about 25 members and it is thought that by a merger of the two the com munity would be better served, said Pade. South Salem Lions' president is Warren Clark; East Salem's is Joe Tompkins. Judge Felton Satisfactory After Surgery Circuit Judge Joseph B. Felton was reported in "satisfactory con dition Monday evening at Salem Memorial Hospital. He underwent surgery for a back ailment Mon day -nornirg. Meanwhile, his domestic rela tions 'ourt duties were assumed by Judge Charles H. Foster, Lake County. Judge Foster will be here this week only. Mrs. Cecelia Ga ley. Sweet Home, will assume the judgeship for two weeks begin ning March 21. Judge Foster is expected to fill-in again the first week in April. Amaranth Order Posts Announced Five Salem persons and an Al bany man were named to posi tions at the 28th annual session of the Grand Court, Order of the Amaranth, recently at Portland. The order is a masonic organiza tion. " Chosen as 1955-56 officers in the grand court were Mrs. Char les W. McCabe, grand wisdom. and Gordon Herrig, Albany, grand commissioner. Named as grand representa tives were Mrs. J. Brownie Ban- gert, , Robert Nickens and Paul Gilmer. To serve on a grand court committee in 1955 will be Mrs. James Manning. State Labor Comm. Norman 0. Nilsen said Monday he is making a study of the photograph problem in hiring teachers. He said, however, that photo graphs can't be used in hiring pro cedure because they reveal the race of the applicant He said there has been come request that photographs be al lowed, and that Oregon educators have been active in supporting fair, employment practice princi ples. The dispute over the photo graphs arose in Klamath County. Firemen Called To Clear Fumes From Building Fumes from sulphur, ignited Monday afternoon, at Graber Bros. Plumbing shop, 433 Ferry St., drove everybody in the building outside until firemen with exhaust fans arrived to drive away the fumes. Among persons ousted were some dozen customers and teach ers from the Arthur Murray Dance Studio upstairs in the same building.,. Only person affected by the fumes was Clyde Johnson, Salem Route 6, who was given oxygen by city first aid men. The fire department said the sulphur was ignited by a torch. Hospital.
