Bowing Champ Bowing' Champ Bowing Champ Film ' Bowlnf By EVE STARR HOLLYWOOD STARR RE PORT: The great love affair be tween movjes and television, which started with the traditional I- hate-you attitude, has just about reached the wedding stage with the report that - Warner Bros, is ready ;to ; con- lude a major puwTV deal with ABC. The usual fac tor is the plan to re-shoot the original movies in an hour-long TV format (al though most probably not with the original stars), with ABC to slot the shows in prime evening time on a regular weekly basis, rather than running them in their origi nal footage as a late-late show as most old movies are scheduled these days. The hour-long dramatic show, of course, has long since proved its worth with such live entries as Studio One. Kraft.' Philco-Good-year, U. S. Steel and a few others On film, however, it's an entirely different proposition. Right off the bat, the story properties alone are going to cost ABC a small fortune; and another fortune will Tie involved in re shooting them. If they can do it for less than $100,000 per film, they'll have to put a couple of geniuses to work. ABC's plan, obviously, is' to latch onto another blockbuster like "Dis neyland." While even the richest sponsor can hardly be expected to shell out $100,000 a week, plus time charges of roughly another $60,000, ABC can expect to gain enormous prestige from such series, attract other sponsors for other (and less expensive) shows and eventually get its money back through re-runs. If the deal goes through, and it apparently will, it leaves only MGM, among the major studios, without a definite tie with TV, a medium which only two years ago was looked upon as the movie in dustry's mortal enemy. Twentieth Century-Fox is turning its 10-Stage Western Ave. lot over to the production of TV film; Co lumbia is well established with-its Screen Gems subsidiary (Ford Theater, Father Knows Best, Rin-Tin-Tin, Captain Midnight); Para mount owns KTLA in Los Angeles and has a controlling interest in Telemeter, the, ,- subscription TV system; Universal has its own TV film subsidiary; and Republic is up to its neck in the TV film business. It's quite a change from the days when no contract player was allowed within 40 miles of a TV camera on penalty of death. (And MGM, at that, has a deal with Lucille BaU and Desi Arnaz for two feature , pictures, both of which will be made by Desilu on Desilu s own lot If you can t like 'em, join 'em.) (Copyright, 1953. General Features Corp.)
