ANGEL Big prepara tions have been made for the an nual Mt. Angel parish sausage-and-kraut and fried-chicken ben efit dinner, Sunday, from 11:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. The meals will be served in the two large basement .dining halls of St Mary's school. ML Angel has quite a reputa tion for its parish dinners and this promises to be no exception. The annual affair is sponsored by the St Ann's Altar Society for the benefit of St Mary's Church, but .the entire community partic ipates in the work and in donat ing a good part of the food. Mt Angel - business men will wait tables, and the Junior Cath olic Daughters will provide free baby sitting. The dinner coincides with the last performance of the Mt Angel Seminary's passion play, "The Son of Man," scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the hilltop audi torium. The production attracted capacity crowds last weekend, and ,all tickets are sold for Sun day's performance. -Valley Briefs Statesman News Service Mt. Angel The Rev. Banquet speaker will be Tom Dryden, ; Portland, past state president Elliott Prairie Gordon Connel ly, formerly of this community, has returned home after spend ing two years in the armed forces. He was stationed in Germany for a while. , Salt Creek The annual Bible Day program will be presented at the Salt Creek Baptist Church at 9:45 a.m. Sunday. There will be recitations and musical numbers. . . The offering will go towards the distribution of Bibles and purchase of other Christian literature. Herbert Anderson, pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, has been chosen to fill the unex pired term of the Rev,." Walter Penner as president of the Dallas Ministerial Association. J The Rev. Mr. Anderson took over the duties of the post when association members met at their regular breakfast meeting , on March 7. He has been serving as vice president of the group. The Rev. Mr. Penner is leaving this community for Los Angeles about April 1 to assume duties with the Association of Evangel icals. " Silvertoh Post Of VFW May Purchase Hall Statesman News Service SILVERTON The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post has taken steps toward buying the Perry W. Nofsker building on High Street, once the Nofsker auto shop and later a printing shop. Commander Ronald Syron re ports that plans, if all goes as scheduled, call for remodeling and converting the building into a meeting place for the organiza tion. At one time the VFW tried to make arrangements with the city to take over the Washington Irving Building, former school building which the' city obtained in a trade-in for. McGinnis ball park. Spring Vacation Starts at Dallas Statesman News Service DALLAS 1 Spring vacation will give a holiday to Dallas pu pils and teachers from March 14 through 18. Classes will take up at the usual time on Monday, March 21. , During the week, when classes are not in session, some teach ers will be attending the confer ence of the Oregon Education as sociation in Portland. Chambers recommended Robertson for the post The new director, a native of Albany, has served with the de partment since 1947, including summer work. He graduated from Willamette university at Salem in 1950 and was then given the position of assistant director. Robertson served as acting di rector for IS months while Cham bers was with the U. S. Marine corps. In January of this year he was named Albany's Junior First Citizen. Hoover PTA Sees Juvenile Program Statesman Newt Service EAST SALEM The case of a typical juvenile was the theme for a skit put on at Hoover PTA Mon day night. . Taking part in the skit were Judge Joseph Felton, Ken Seipp, Frank Kehrli, Hugh Nelson, Kirk Mulder, Billy Beatty and Mrs. Floy Mudd. Elected to the nominating com mittee were Oscar Specht, Dick Espey and Mrs. Edith Brydon. Election of officers will be held at the April meeting. Hosts were the fourth and sixth grade room mothers. UNMISSED FUNDS GREEN BAY, Wis. F) Clar ence Naso, found a package of cash and checks totaling $10,000 on the street and a bank book showing the money -belonged to a hospital. Donations of material and labor have been pooled with funds raised by the Lions : at their summer Carnival to get the work underway, f , ; Certificates have -been pur chased by numerous clubs and individuals providing additional funds. Future carnivals will re pay these certificates after com pletion of the building. The rustic log-type building will feature a main 'room ap proximately 40x90, a smaller room exclusively for use of the Boy Scouts, and other featuss. A total of 5,000 square feet of floor space is planned. The build ing will be available for use for general community activities. j Actual investment will be ap proximately 115,000 but valuation will be much higher because- of generous donations. Lions Club members have been turning out on week-ends to volunteer their work on the building. It is hoped that work can be completed by the end of the year. PTA Hears Sen! Hatfield Statesman News Service i ' i SOUTH SALEM Sen. Mark Hatfield was guest speaker Wed nesday evening at Morningside PTA meeting. He spoke on education and stated that one of the major problems in Oregon is the need for 3,400 more classrooms. He also discussed salaries for teach ers, declaring that 50 percent of the teachers educated in Oregon go to other states, to teach because better salaries are offer ed.
