Vinson Warns Of Russian Naval Might WASHINGTON (UP)-Reo. Carl Vinson (D-Ga) warned. Tuesday that Russia is building a major naval force which would help it launch Korean-type "brush wars" in the event of an atomic stale mate. - (Vinson, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told a reporter "We know that Russia is far ahead of us in the latest type submarines." "We also know that . Russia is engaged in the development of a major naval force with the latest type of combat ships." he said. "These facts support my con tention that if we face an atomic standof we may find ourselves engaged in brush wars. The grow ing naval power of Russia simply improves their capability to fight brush wars." i . "We must and will have thje nav al power to meet that threat," Vinson said during a recess in hearings on the Navy's proposed $1,317,000,000 shipbuilding program for the meal year starting July 1. Navy witnesses produced charts yesterday showing how the I Soviet Union is far outstripping the United States in the construction of new combat vessels. "The USSR : has more ships in active service in commission than any other navy except our own,"! Adm, Robert B. Carney, chief of; Boy Sets Fire To Gain. Entryy To Juvenile Home PORTLAND (UP) Multnomah County officers Tuesday 1 were in-; vestigating the confession of a nine-year-old boy who said he set a $5000 fire Sunday in Parkrose be cause he wanted to be sent to the juvenile home. " Detective Walter Graven said the boy had heard about the ju venile home from another boy who had spent some time there. Ap-I parently the nine-year-old was in! pressed, Graven said. The boy told officers he set the ' fire bv igniting papers and bnxe. The fire spread to two other busi ness establishments. Graven said the boy came from a wholesome" family currently undergoing financial troubles. He said the boy had also admitted setting fire to a truck about a month ago. Damage was $30. The case was turned over to juvenile authorities. naval operations said in a state ment read to the committee by Adm. Donald B. Duncan, vice chief of naval operations. i "While we have no information that the USSR has built, or is building, aircraft carriers, the num ber of Soviet naval aircraft is up wards of 3O00," Carney said. "This weakness in the lack of aircraft carriers is a weakness which we must exptoit," Carney said. The Navy program includes a fifth 200 million dollar supercarrier of the Forrestal class. j At Bush House Articles From The Phi iooines Are Exhibited Miss Elizabeth Lord's extensive Philippine collection is now on ex hibit at the Salem Art Museum, Bush House, which the interested public is invited to view each week cay. Friday night a public recep tion will be held at the Bush House between 7 and 9 o clock. Miss Lord will be present to meet her friends and explain the various items of her collection. Memoers of the Salem Art Association are . 1 . 1 M arranging tne reception ana an interested persons are invited through the press to attend. Of particular interest are the old hand embroideries from the Philippines which she acquired on her first trm to the Islands in 1913. The embroideries were con sidered to be a hundred years old fit that time, included is native costume worn bv ladies, the full "butterfly sleeve attached to a flimsy blouse and the kerchief wmcn was used as a scan over the shoulder. The Philippine women en mat Denoa were noiea for their fine work as they had expert instruction from the Span ish and French sisters of the Cath olic Church. . Lord, mother of Miss Lord. Furniture Exhibited A small collection of furniture made j firm the native woods is also in the upstairs gallery. The Philippine produces -many varie ties of beautiful woods, and the men have carved all types of fur niture. An antique Spanish chair of the early days is one of 16 chairs belonging to a dining room set. They were found by Miss Xord in an old tumble-down build ing on aa antique hunting jaunt. Other objects of wood carving are placed in the dining room, wood candlesticks and a salad bowl, which was carved from . a solid piece . of Narra wood, all free design without pattern. The Philippine collection will re main at the Salem Art Museum through the month of March. Also exhibited are pen and ink draw ing of the Philippines by Monroe Gilbert, who at one time lived in the Islands. Miss Biers Wins UN Contest Miss Judy Biers won the con test in the preliminary speech for the United Nations Youth Pilgrim age sponsored by the IOOF Lodge Monday night, at the meeting of the Salem Rebekah Lodge.' Other Salem high school students to compete along with Miss Biers in the finals to be held on April 4 will be William Richter and Rich ard Sorenson. Mrs. Clara Reese became a mem ber of the lodge by transfer. ?e program included musical num bers by Glen Sansburn. At the March 14 meeting there will , be election of delegates to the convention in May.
