2-SeG 2-Sriresmin, Salem, Ore., Monday, Jin. 24, 1955 r Strikes 'n Spares By BROWNIE VALDEZ Theyll Do It Every Time By Jimmy Hatlo V J Tony Vittone hands $50 check to Don and Eleanore Lutz who hold proudly the score they bowled that won them the mixed doubles jackpot at the University Bowl last Sunday night We think you readers might be interested in a few facts and figures about our state tournament currently running at the EMBACO Bowl in. Coos Bay. Thanks to our very efficient state secretary Vern Turner, here are just a few of them ... i There will be 282 five man teams, 687 doubles teams, 1374 in the singles and 1277 in the all-events list Cities with some of the larger team entries are Portland 41, Eugene 25, Roseburg 25, Hillsboro Association 21, Salem 17 and Coos Bay with 27. We might add that Brookings with 6, Rockaway -2 and St Helens with 2 are making their first return since 1948 . . . Considering the distances most teams will have to travel this tourney will have one of the highest records in the United States (for state tournaments) for miles traveled ... Pendleton Covers Most Miles There will be at least 225 teams that will have to travel 200 miles or more round trip, with Pendleton getting the nod for the greatest distance to travel one way, 426 miles. John Day and Burns will run a dose second. Waldoort and Roseburg, of the larger associations, get the nod for shortest distance to go, that being a hair short of 85 miles ... On top of this, the state tourney will bring around 1300 bowlers as well as their families to the city over a period of - six weeks ... Pictured above are . the winning combination of Don and Eleanore Lutz who last Sunday night broke the mixed doubles jackpot at the University Bowl with an alley scorching 1359 total The weaker side of the family had a very good 494 series while the fidget slapped the pins for a solid 616 total. The kids carried a 249 handicap, little of which they needed. The youthful team ofPaul Hale Myrna Bare captured second spot with a 1232 score. Pat Hart and Cornelius Potter nabbed third place with 1225. Fourth went to the duo of Joyce Younger and AI Bakke whoThad 1220. Ed Talbot and Alberta Thompson collected last payoff with 1204 ... Happened to overhear one of the minor league rollers say to r teammate, after she had just left the Big-4 split, "Oh well, it could be worse." . .. The question I would like answered is: What could be worse than the Big-4 and still keep the ball on. the alley? . . . J . 205 Game Rolled in 414 Series ' How can anv bowler roll 205 the first game and end with a series of 414? "Maybe Frank Ward could furnish that answer, huh Choker? ... i They tell me Rex "Clutch" Adolph came through like a typical anchor man last week when all he had to do was mark the last frame for the win. Rex took careful aim, delivered the ball and everything went out like a shot but the 1-5-7-6-8 pins. No need to mention who won the game .but that new, tie Rex is sporting was donated by an appreciative group . . . - Helen Glodt threw a game that should be tops in the oddity list. The hook throwing Helen rolled a 137 game with three splits, three blows, three spares and three strikes. We add that the three strikes came all in the last frame. OK bowlers, try and top that for one game ... A good series that was overlooked last week was rolled by the 118 average Rose Karcha. Rosy topped the maples for a solid 520 with games of 142-10 and 188 . . . Beginners Luck Fails to Shotc Congratulations to Eva Gardner for her dandy 201 effort turned In during the mixed league last Wednesday night at CapitoL The 201 is the highest that Eva has ever rolled ... , x " Beginner's luck avoided the new sponsor-bowler Dee Engle like a favorite mother-in-law for 19 frames before she could garner her first mark of the n'ghL Dee finally managed to topple the pins for a strike in the 19th frame ... We add that there was no one in the house trying any harder than the beginning Dee . . . Very good game of 195 rolled by the ,125 average bowler Grace Shad in the Capitol Minorctte league ... Mick Mather continues to be the hottest sub roller in the city. Mick's Inst outing was a dandy 611, bowling for the Micks Sien entrv nf the Commercial loop at CapitoL Mick had games of 219-199-193 ... - Recess or Change Could Help lust to show what difference it makes to some bowlers after a short recess or changing of alleys, we had Don Taylor, secretary of the stat? house league, keep track of the bowlers scores who bowl in both shifts ..... Mrst of the bowlers seemed to nave better luck in the second loop as the scores will attest. Thev were as follows: Ed Corrigan 414-541, Don Taylor 47G-461. Owen Mc Adams 441-511, Bob Blensley 454-486, Paul Hale 422-4P3. Ted Roake 561-483, Clarence Prange 4?6-4?8, Bill Biegler 540-573. Rudy Meffort 518-543, George Kayser 506-524. Just goes to show you ... Wheeler English made all the noise in state house action when he ponnded the mantes for a sojid 616. Wheeler scorched - the alleys with games of 172-219 and 225 for his dandy 616 . . . Low average roller Daryl Storm created quite a storm when be started the nirht with a 212, slapped out a 204 in the second but came back to normal in the last for a close to average 153 for a good 569 . . . Topping the list in the major loop was the veteran bowler Larry (Scab) Oslund. Scabby plastered the pins for a solid 667 in lavor of the Karr's Misers five . . . "Santee? I can beat him." That's exartlv what Kielon AA ' o .- : L. . J, and convincingly. He allowed San te to set the pace midway into the last of th eight laps and then passed, the Kansas runner in a breeze. Old Record Broken - Nielsen's time was 4:09.5, shav ins four seconds off the mppt rtv. ord It was one of the fastest times ever recorded over a flat indoor track. " But . Gunnar wasn't happy arxnii it. "The first quarter was too slow,' he said. "I could have made it in 4:06 without any trouble if the first quarter had been faster." The indoor record of 4:05.3 held by Gil Dodds is going to get a vigorous challenge from Nielsen from here on in. First Quarter Slow He was correct about the slow first quarter. Lou Olive of the U.S. Military Academy elected to set the pace for the first quarter mile and was clocked in the slow time of 68 seconds. The pace picked up after that. with Santee surging into the lead at the halfway mark. Nielsen hung close to his heels and went after Wes on the final lap. The Dane's brilliant last quarter time was 56.8 seconds. Santee, .the fastest U.S. miler In history, was an unhappy boy after Nielsen had reversed the result of The Philadelphia Inquirer Games Friday. "It was just one of those breaks," said Santee, who trailed Nielsen by 15 yards at the finish. Santee Unhappy Santee is going to be the majoi opposition for the future half-dozen indoor races in store for Nielsen. But Gunnar said he has no doubt he'll be able to beat Santee from here on in. 7 6',i 3'i 2 2 At Least THIS NEW RAZOR... cln completely, automatically... with the flip of a lever 1 Immediately (18 to 55) Who Want to Get into a Field PAYING THOUSANDS STARTING WAGES $100 AND MORE WEEKLY We Train You FOR BILLION DOLLAR 'CLEVISI0N-RAD10 INDUSTRY TO LI FY FOR TV-Radio Service TV-Radio Installation TV Receiver Mfg. & Design TV Shop Service Mgrs.
