De Witt's store has 6000 square feet of floor space, and a com 'plete line of groceries, meats and produce. The establishment will be self service with meats and produce packaged, the owner said. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 pjn. daily and Sunday. Heading the store's various de partments are Phil Newtft, pro duce: Steve Wilson, butcher shop. and Mrs. Ramona Miles, checking stands. Mary Swank Dies, Lived At Stayton Statesman Kwi Serrie STAYTON Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday al the Weddle Mortuary here for Mrs ' Mary Alfretta Swank, longtime canyon resident, who died Tuesday at a Silverton nursing home. Mrs. Swank was born in Russell County, Kans.. Aug. 17. 1876. She was a resident of the Lyons area until about 10 years when her hus band. William H. Swank, died. Then she lived with a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Trask, here until about three weeks ago. . Surviving besides the daughter are two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Downie. Wheeler. Ore. and Mrs. Berniece Taliaferro. Hayward, Calif.; also two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The Rev. Kenneth Abbot will of ficiate. Burial will be in Fox Val ley Cemetery, Lyons, the Willard Benson holdings in Silverton Hill. . - The office and the planing mill, however, were retained at the old holdings. The office is still being manned but the planer is down. When running, this was one of the larger remaining nulls in Silverton, employing 35 men. Tw Rutniag Johnson Bros. Lumber company and the Silver Gang Lumber com pany are the only two mills in the Silverton and Scotts Mills area i still operating. The Silver Gang employs five men and Johnsons', 5. Plans are to maintain these two nulls through the winter, managers said Tuesday. However, this will depend upon weather, Johnson said. Should the Abiqua and : Silver Creek basins, from where the timber is logged, be snowed under, the mills will close, Benson said that he was not "definite as to whether the Twin Falls would reopen this spring. Last U Close The Raymond Kellis mill was the last to close in the Scotts Mills area and at present Mr. and Mrs. Kellis are visiting in Penn sylvania with Mrs. Kellis brother- in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Oas, formerly with the Winlock Handle factory in Sil verton, which moved to Eugene some years ago. Kellis, before leaving, said that he did not plan to reopen at Scotts Mills. Sawlox Price Up In the meantime, second-growth sawlog prices in the Willamette valley have approached an all time high. Prices that were considered "bootleg" or black market a month ago are the "market1 nrice today. Increases came mainly in the north and south ends of the valley. Camp-run prices are $5 to $8 higher than late 1951. the high est record. Graded second-growth is snout equal to the record high of the Korean war. As a result, federal Indian Schools like Chemawa may not always be. needed, added Mrs. Hildegard Thompson, Washing ton, d.c. ; The Chemawa visitor said 56 per: cent of all Indian children in the United State; now go to the same public schools that most other children attend. This is 2 . per cent increase over last year; and a far cry from the turn of the century when only 245 Indian children attended pub lic schools. Springs Indian School in Eastern Oregon. - Bulk of the students at Che mawa (450) are Navajos. The current school year saw 7,000 Navajo pupils start their educa tion here and at nine comparable Indian schools. Most of them are 12 to 14 years old. This is the "big year" in the Navajo program, Mrs. Thompson said. Next year will be a "clean up year," aimed at getting all re maining Navajos of that age started to school. Then the present five-year school program for Navajos will be increased until they receive a full 12 years of schooling.
