Fifty defendants pleaded guil ty, four forfeited bail .totaling $125, and one case was dismissed. One defendant stood trial and was found guilty and four pleas were pending at the end of the ter, West Salem. (Adv) year. Bulk of the cases involved al leged violation of Oregon food laws with fines assessed by the courts aggregating $1100. Basts of other complaints in volved larceny of livestock 9, selling milk while the state li cense was suspended 4, misrepre senting weight of a commodity 1, operating without a meat dealer's license 3, misbranding onions 1 and, operating without a produce . dealer's license 3. ' Three men drew penitentiary sentences for larceny of livestock, two received three months in jail, and two Others' are waiting sent ence. Two have not entered pleas.- The charge under the seed law involved a farmer who. admitted failure to label agricultural seed . and failure to label mixed seed. The department report showed that district attorneys issued 18 warnings on hamburger viola tions, two on frozen desserts and two on mislabeled milk. The department handed out 22 regulatory warnings to produce and seed dealers. In the - dairy field ' investiga tions, uncovered 18 dairies sell- ing milk without a state license and sanitary inspection and two selling milk from herds which had not been tested. Dairy sus pensions during the year involved bacteria count excessive 119, sani- , tation violations 18, sediment 1, and temperature violations 2. - The department seized 677 eases of canned whole milk, later released for pet food sales, and 30 dozen of eggs released after being correctly labeled. , MILK FINE LEVTED William J.
