Wea iher Handicaps Sec. McKay in McKay in Campaign ' By A- ROBER SMITH 1; K; SUtesmaa Correspondent .. j WASHINGTON Oregon lsnt the only' state in which politics are getting pretty stormy this fall, as Secretary of Interior Douglas McKay can readily testify. t hi! .:- .v wi' . - ' McKay is being deluged with Waking invitations from Republican groups from coast to coast, his aides say, but the secretary is begin ning to wonder whether be can weather the entire campaign. It seems he began his chores for the Grand Old Party in solid Re publican Iowa last week but it turned 'so cold the day he was there for an outdoor meeting that all his listeners climbed into their autos to keep warm. ' ( McKay went through with his speech, utterly unassured he. was being heard. , j Then last week-end the secretary set out for Maine. But, he didn't get past Boston, where ' hurricane Edna stopped him in his tracks. After talking by telephone : with Gov. Burton M. Cross who 1 got caught in a Democratic "hurri cane" himself two days later Mc Kay learned the political rally 'was being cancelled due to the storm. So he watched his first hurricane from a Boston hotel window. 1 And he's got some 40 speech making appearances to go before election day. . i Time Article Helped Aides attribute McKay's apparent increase in popularity to the article in Time magazine recently which featured the secretary's portrait on the magazine cover. Reader's Di gest has picked up the article for republication in slightly condensed form in i October issue. - McKay isn't likely to change his "country boy' manner, which wa heavily played up in the Time story, not after reading the com plimentary fan mail provoked by the story. His aides say McKay fans expressed pleasure j in this homely duality of McKay and blasted away at the "city slick ers" they were sure had overrun Washington, D.C. , . Enjoyed Alaska ! McKay surprises friends' in Wash ington by telling of the "delight ful" time he enjoyed i in Alaska recently, contrary to the impres sion gained by many here from press reports of a stormy session be had with statehood advocates. "Alaskans :-t fine people," says He enjoys telling of the box of assorted vegetables be was given by a farmer in the Matanuska Val ley, which he had converted into a delicious salad aboard jhis car en the Alaska Railroad. Praise For McKay f ' President Eisenhower gave Mc Kay an unexpected (and unsolicit ed) pat on the back this past week In at. letter to Sen. Wallace Ben nett (R-, Utah), who wanted to know the president's attitude to ward the billion dollar upper Colo rado River reclamation project which bogged down in Congress The letter praised thej project and McKay and his resource de velopment policies one of the big election issues in the ; West i this autumn. '.j !i Two Named I. w . i UP Managers NEW YORK (UP) Hugh Baillie. president of the United Press, an nounced Tuesday the appointment of Bert Masterson as manager of the Central Division and of Dale Johns as manager of the New York New England Division. I Both men have had wide exj perience' in the news and business departments bf the United Pressj Masterson, who has been mana-l gpr of the New York-New England Division with headquarters in Bp$ ton. will move to Chicago. JomriT division business manager at Chi caao. will succeed Masterson in Boston. 'Jc ' ')'.-'; I Airline Orient Flight Via Alaska SAN FRANCISCO (UP) 4 Pan American World Airways', said . Tuesday it may soon be able to of- ter non-stop iz1 nour passenger service from the United States to Japan Via the "Great Circle Route.? i Col. Clarence M. Young, execu tive vice president of Pan Ameri can's Pacific-Alaska division, said the company was waiting only for delivery of the new Douglas DC-7C clippers and approval from the Civil Aeronautics Board, to use the Great Circle route. Young said the company has asked the CAB to remove an "obsolete" provision in its certi ficate requiring PAA to stop at a mid-Pacific Island on its way to the Orient. Northwest Airlines is at present the only regular passenger line to use the shorter northern route from Seattle to Tokyo via Anchor age and the Aleutians. . North west's trip takes approximately 16 hours. ; .. .- .-I f ' Pan-Am hoped to make Seattle its west coast port of entry with co-terminals in San Francisco and Los Angeles, -Young said. But it would continue to use the present mid-Pacific route by way of Haw aii and wake Island. "Younftiaid the new DC-7C clip pers, due for delivery in 1956, will be especially adapted for ' long range, over-ocean flying. The plane will be able to cruise at 365 miles an hour non-stop for 5222 miles. The distance from Seattle to Tokyo is 4770 miles. Order Stops Priest River Dam Action EPHRATA. Wash. (A Grant vuuuijr vmiijr 4iauiva urns been issued a temporary restrain er banning the Washington State Power Commission from taking any further action in regard to the proposed Priest Rapids proj ect on the Columbia River, it was disclosed Monday night. The restrainer, issued by Grant County Superior Judge Robert "T. Hunter last Friday, is the newest fare up in a running battle be tween the PUD and the newly authorized commission over which agency should construct 'the dam, to be located 2S miles below the Vantage bridge. (!) The voters must choose in the November elections between "the far-sighted. constructive Eisenhower program or a "socialist empire of govern ment ownership and control. Secretary of the Interior McKay said here Monday night. 1 He told a Republican rally that Republican control of Congress is "essential if . we are to continue to have - honesty, integrity and efficiency in government in place ot the old chiseling, grafting and extravagance. i "If the Democrats were to gain a majority in the 84th Congress, they; would work overtime trying to embarrass and hamstring the Eisenhower administration." he told the 500 persons present it McKay said the Republicans have accomplished much in the last two years. 'j "They have reduced the threat of -socialism and communism within our borders. Tey have strengthened our defense against aggression from abroad. They have, in short, added in a thousand d liferent ways to the continued peace and prosperity of our people," he said. ; . V t : THROUGH SERVICE PLANNED j SEATTLE m United Air Lines announced Monday it will begin 3Y hour non-stop flights between Seattle and Los Angeles Oct. 23, Using 365-mile-in-hour DC7s on the run for the first time.
