Monday, Septsmbsr 5, 1554 Church-Sponsored Migrant Camp program Considered Big Success j in Salem Area r - - , n . : i .- - , -: y- - - - : Children learned to read, to wash and wme to use a toothbrush for the first time during the Polk-Marion migrant worker's; program sponsored this summer by 'Salem Council of Churches. I Enlarged over the previous year's program it was "very much a success," according to the Rev. Harold W. Black, chairman of the Salem Migrant Committee. -. Although the cost of the pro gram wis only a little over $800. j the Rev. Mr. Black explained that this was only j possible be- cause of generous contributions from Salem firms and service or ganizations. Everything from au tomobiles to bedding was loaned to the program. :' The program was; run primar ily by four young I women,5 the Misses Joan Nicholson, Mt. Ster ling, Ohio, supervisor for the Sa lem area; Carolyn Miller, Whit tier, Calif.; Jacque t Ritchie; Ba kersfield, Calif.; and Betsy Sharp, Laceyville, Pa. ; , t Stayton Area Added New this year is the extension of the program to! the Stayton area during the August bean season. Daily children's programs were held in one larger camp and nightly programs put on in other camps. .p ! h Available for the migrant workers was a lending library and moving, pictures. The staff also sponsored a weekly program for the workers in; the Stayton Community Building' which in cluded community singing, tal ent and movies. ' Js '). j.-j . Migrant work in the Indepen dence area started early in July. Here two large camps were served with daily afternoon chil dren's programs, f; j j These programs which readied more than 60 children stressed religious education, music, group recreation , and individual play. Health education and crafts were also taught. - - ? i . - VisisU Reach 709 W : , i An estimated 650 to 700 chil dren and adults were reached by weekly evening programs-of home visitation, informal recre ation and movies. Such activities were taken to six camps in the Independence area. ? Young women and mothers were brought together in anoth er camp to meet for a weekly sewing group. Some 10 to IS women met to sew, embroider, knit and crochet su i i The staff discussed with; the Tublie Health departments 1 of Marion and Polk Counties! the possibility of extending ' health and education services to the mi grant workers. I ; ! Plans for Next Tear i M Big plans are already being made for next summer, accord ing to the Rev. Mr. Black. He ex plains that efforts are going to be made ia interesting students from Willamette University and O. C. E. in helping with the pro gram. 1; - J; A farewell get-together ! . was held recently at the Ernest P. Goulder home in honor of this summer's student staff. Special guests for the event were those serving migrant camps ia other sections of Ore gon: The Rev. and; Mrs. Frank Rtyes, Njssa; Joyce Given s, Hillsboro, and Mary McFarland, Milton-Freewater. i ; These along with f Miss Whit acre, the state supervisor, re mained in Salem to spend an ev aluation weekend together. . FBI Warns of Jitters ,4 WASHINGTON fj U- J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI,! said Saturday parents of small children should use particular care in se lecting a baby sitter because one of the latest law enforcement prob lems "is the baby sitter turned kidnaper." I ? In an editorial addressed to all law enforcement officials In the current' issue of the; Federal Bu reau of Investigation law enforce ment bulletin. Hoover said: i ! "One of the latest law enforce ment problems is the baby sitter turned kidnaper. I have noted that in. a group of seven cases referred to the FBI for investigation in late 1953 and early 1854, -all involving small children, six of the seven al leged kidnapers were women and each of them had been acting as baby sitter for the victim. ; "Ia the seventh case, the abduc tor was the husband of a woman who bad recently had the child in her care. l! i ; i "There were eight children ab ducted in these seven cases and all of them were recovered un harmed. Such fortunate results can hardly be expected however in all furore cases. - I j "The average age of the victims was less than 21 months, an age at which children change so rapid ly that visual identification j may soon be complicated by consider able doubt - h -; ; , "It is also worth noting that one one of the victims was taken over a thousand miles from his home and the average distance in all seven cases was ' well over 400 miles. This is an additional compli cating factor in locating and ident ifying die victims and the kid naper." - . - s j ! "Written Invitation LEBANON, N. H. Stassen bas made several announcements re cently "opening the door to traders of the Soviet and most of its satel lites to more and more items he has characterized as non-military." I "The propaganda value of this concession," Jenner said, "is of far greater value to the Commun ists than any -goods they might procure from this country." j -1 Stassen announced on f Aug. 25 a decision which he said was backed by President Eisenhower to increase the list of goods which this country's allies may ship to Russia and her European : satel lites without losing U. Stassen said the redaction of the! embargo list was "in the best interest -of the United States" and added that it would result in "a net advantage to the Free World bt expanded peaceful trade and bore effective control of war po tential items." f Jenner's criticism acompanied publication of a volume of testi mony taken at public hearings by Ibe Senate . internal Security sub committee, which be heads. 'Frame' Hinted In Case of French Official SYDNEY. Australia LB The leader of Australia's opposition La bor Party declared here a feminine French diplomat arrested on the basis of testimony in the Petrov spy inquiry may have been framed. Dr. Herbert Evatt, who was for eign minister ; when his party was in power, said ia a statement the charges against Mrs. Rose - Marie Oilier, 45, may well turn out to have been "deliverately falsified and fabricated to injure her and her friends."; The statement, addressed to French Ambassador Louis Roche, said Mrs. Oilier finds herself "de famed throughout the world as a spy apparently on the say so of two paid informers. . .surely this is worse than McCarthyism." j Refers U Petraa ; He referred to Vladimir Petrov, the former Soviet Embassy official who says he headed a widespread espionage ring in Australia, and to Petrov's wife, Evdokia, both of whom have obtained asylum here. ; Petrov told a royal commission on espionage that Mrs. Oilier gave him vital information on shipments ol Australian War materiel to Indo china 'While she was vice consul and second secretary of the French Embassy. Petrov said he relayed the information to Moscow. ; Evatt has previously attacked the handling of the Petrov case by the conservative Liberal Country Party i coalition government . of Prime Minister Robert G. Menzies. Several of Eratt's staff members have been named in the Petrov testimony.' j Critical f Heche I Evatt was critical of Roche, who disclosed the arrest Friday of Mrs. Oilier on the French island of New Caledonia Aug. 22 on the basis Of Petrov's testimony. Said Evatt: ; "I express ,! the hope and con fidence that the French govern ment will show more: sense of pro priety and justice not to say chivalry to Mme. Oilier than has been exhibited by the French ambassador in Australia. : "I suggest that the government should dispatch to Australia forth with a leading lawyer who will be given full opportunity of invest gating i the truth. of the Petrovs' accusations against Mme. Oilier and interrogating the Petrovs to see whether or not there has been a deliberate attempt to injure her and rum her career for vicious pur poses."! - ', Mrs. Oilier is being returned to France.' A French Foreign Minis try spokesman said she would be charged in a French court with "grave failure" in exercising her duties as an employ of the gov ernment ' The I spokesman said Australia. had "kindly warned, the French government of Petrov a allegations and it is now up to French author ilies to take appropriate measures. DREAMT THEFT R0CKF0RD, I1L (AP) Edwin Kenna, 45, was arrested for walk ing into aa unlocked supermar ket, helping himself to two frozen chickens, a loaf of bread, a beef meat pie, a carton of cigarettes and a jean of frtttn strawberries.
