national United Defensp Fund
will be reviewed in Salem today
by Eli Fox, associate director of
the public relations department
of the organization. .
. Fox, who comes to Salem to
meet with the staff and board of
the Oregon Chest will also meet
this afternoon with the budget
committee of the Salem United
Fund to discuss the budgetary
needs of his organization for

The United Defense fund is
a federation of five agencies', of
which the.USO is the! largest

The request about Cavender, a
man between 25 and 35, . came
from El Paso, Tex., where Red
Cross has been helping his
mother, Mrs. Jessie Cavender, lo
cate her son. They were to have
met in El Paso early, this month.
Meanwhile in Texas, the body
of a drowning "victim has been
identified 11 tentatively as Caven-
ders, but , the I Red Cross and
police authorities there are con
tinuing an investigation into tne
man's whereabouts.

Salem People Excel at Fire Prevention
Salem residents are better than
average at employing fire preven
tion measures in tneir own homes,
according to a survey made by
city firemen under the direction of
Chief Ellsworth L. Smith.. I
The survey was conducted dur
ing the month of June as a part
ot a state-wide home fire preven
tion pVogram. . 1
Figures released by . Smith
showed that of 2863 Salem homes
inspected, 47.10 percent were
found to have complied fully with
all standard - precautions. - .The
state-wide percentage was', only
33.09. - y
Checked during the survey were
such items as ashes not in metal
containers, rubbish : not properly
taken care of, unsafe wiring, flam
mable liquids not properly stored,
etc. Salem rated better than the
state as a whole on all these items,
according to Smith.'.
More than 43,000 Inspection:
were made over the state durinj
the June survey.
