Aber , Hartford, Conn., has 47.3 tele phones for each 100 people, New Haven, Conn., 42.8. Hi, there! Painting season Is upon us, and I think everyone has been bitten with 1 the bug! Someone just said this morning, "What in the world shall I paint my kitchen?" Kitchens seem to be a problem We're so used to thinking of kitchens in gleaming white that it's hard to get habit out of the way. Actually, I have the feeling that there is only one main thought to keep in mind in decorating a kitchen that it must look "happy". , ; - Now to' me "happy" means more than just cheerful - with the amount of time required in the kitchen besides the number of . "extra-curricularM activities the whole family carries on there, color and design in the kitchen needs to give us inspiration, sat isfaction, friendliness and warmth. : So many of the hew homes now are built with keeping-rooms fireplace, bookshelves, Boston rocker, and all with the idea of centering family activity near the "heart of the home." You'll say, well it's easy to decorate a kitch en like -that, but what about my two by four kitchen how. can I give it the 'happy," look? The answer to that lies in using color and design and an interesting curtain treatment Color? We certainly don't have to be bound by color these days with combinations of color just good enough to eat just begging to be used. How about pale pink with charcoal? Or feature lemon yellow, lime, and olive green used together. Even strawberry pink with dark red with a touch of mint green on the curtains. How about pale casaba green with apri cot and cocoa brown. See? Tpey really, do sound good enough to eat! ' v One of the. fool-proof ways of choosing a color combination is to select a wallpaper for the din ette perhaps a sketchy scene of a French sidewalk cafe, or one of the new designs with baskets of fruit or perhaps a small neat provincial design then paint the rest of the kitchen ad cupboards in a color from the paper. It's hard to stand in the middle of the kitchen and dream up a new color scheme, lt takes Inspiration from someplace, and wallpaper is a good place to look for it Perky curtains made in cafe style of chintz, organdy, or sheet ing are the answer for easy laun dering, privacy, and the "new'' look. They can be hung on brass rodding, or on the usual oval rod ding. Try matching wallpaper and fabrics for coordination in dinette and kitchen. Start looking, with out preconceived ideas and see where your imagination takes you! Your family may think vou've eaten too many strawber ries, but I warrant they will brag on you when you're through with your project! Not only that but vou yourself will enjoy your "hap py" kitchen. Try it See you next week in San Francisco. Mary Thomas . Interior' Decorator Roberts Bros.
