The new programs include pre - professional curricula of two years in length, high school teacher preparation, and a liberal arts m V t A.1 . - and science program cuiminaung In the B. S. degree in General Studies, v ; , t The pre professional' program enables a student to complete two years of college work toward starting in professions such as 1 medicine, law, dentistry, business administration, journalism, and similar fields. One year of university or col lege preparation is given in such specialized areas as engineering, agriculture, forestry and .pharn acy. , ". "V.- Students May Transfer Students may transfer to other state institutions in Oregon for the remainder of their specializ ed professional work in these fields. ' , The high school teacher pre paration program enables stu dents to be certificated to teach In high school. They will major in one of three areas, social sci ence, humanities or science-math-ematics. The Oregon College of Educa tion is the only state-supported smaller college in western .Ore- City Council Hears Report On Finances SUtesmaa Newt nrte . k JEFFERSON The quarterly financial report was heard at this week's meeting of the City Coun cil, and showed a total amount on hand July 1 fo $7,097. The state tax street fund was $1,764; special water fund, $167; special sewage and drainage fund, $4,116: general fund, $1,109. Bonds outstanding were: Water works improvement bonds, $ouo; bonds, 1953 issue, $10,000, mak ing a total of $10,500. Fire Chief Gilbert Hoevet's ap plication for use of upper floor of the City Hall for fire depart ment meetings was auowea. Mrs.' . Discussion was continued on draining west side of Second Street, north from Hazel to south side of Church Street : New Speed Limits Set At Hubbard StaUimaa Newt Serrle HUBBARD The Hubbard City Council has approved a decision of the State Highway Commission to establish a 45 mile per hour speed control zone on Highway 99E within the city limits and a 20 miles-per-hour speed zone near the gride school during school crossing times, t. , The council also passed e reso lution to make 3rd Street a through street Stop signs have been erected at 3rd and 3rd and E Streets and are to be erect ed at 3rd and F and at 3rd and ii streets. . - The speed zone is 'the result of action by the City Couacil in re questing the zone following a pre sentation of the Deed for it by a committee representing the Hub bard Woman's -Club. NortWest Phone Company Drops Hearing on Rates Northwest Telephone Company, serving several communities ; in Central Oregon and the Sheridan Willamina area, has withdrawn its application for rate revisions. Public Utilities Commissioner Charles H. Heltzel said Thursday. The revised tariff plan was to Marie Metke, 64, Dallas, Dies of Cancer Statesman Newt Senrle. , pALLAS - Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Rose Metke, M. Dal las, wm be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bollman Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Dallas Cemetery. Mrs. Metke died Tuesday at a Dallas nursing home. 'Death was attributed to cancer. The deceased was born Nov. 10, 1889, in Germany and was mar ride to Robert Metke Aug. 13, 1931. at Erie. Pa. She had lived at Buffalo, N. ' Y., from 1920 to 1931 when she moved to Dallas. ' Her home address was Dallas route 3, .box 117. Besides her husband she is sur vived by four sisters, Selma Isle, Batavia. 111., . Lydia Brenaman, Long Beach, Calif., Minnie Whit meir and Freila Zimmerle, both of -Germany;, also two brothers, Wilhelm Scneib and Gustav Scfaeib in Germanyr have become effective July 1, but was suspended by the commission ,er pending a hearing.
