City News IBrnefs BRIDGE CATCHES FIRE A fire Wednesday on a foot bridge joining Howard and South 12th Streets was extinguished by Salem firemen with no damage reported, though a portion of the structure was charred slightly. Firemen said there was obvious evidence that the fire was set, believed to have been done by children. SWING TAKEN A child's swing, valued at $28, was reported to city police as stolen sometime last week from the home of Mrs. Pearl McVey, 1343 Sixth St She told officers that she had first presumed the theft was in the neighborhood, but when it wasn't returned she, decided it was maliciously taken. Dr. Woodmansee will be away at convention until June 14. WILLIAMS TO TALK Bruce Williams, president of the board of directors of the Salem Senators baseball club, vill speak on civic responsibility to the Senators at the noon meet ing today of the Salem Optimists Club at the Senator Hotel. All those interested are invited by club officials to attend. BLOOD DONORS CALLED A Red Cross blood drawing for the public is set for today, from noon to 5 p.ra. at Salem Armory. Mrs. Doris George Hale, a Zieg feld Follies star in the 1920's and now a grandmother, was graduat ed from Willamette University this week. The wife of Paul Hale, Salem accountant, the still beautiful singer and dancer will go on to the University of Southern Cali fornia next year for her master's degree. Mrs. Hale majored in piano and plans to teach. She and her sister, Phyllis, were billed as the George Sist-rs, a song and dance team. They ap peared both in the George White scandals and the Ziegfeld follies. Mrs. Hale met Florenz Zieg feld after winning a prize in a beauty contest in the Atlantic City pageant in 1923. She had ex tensive piano instruction before going on the stage. She is the mother of triplets, and has two, grandchildren. CAMERA REPORTED STOLEN Jack ForristeL 565 N. 23nd St., reported to city police Wednes day that a camera and range find er were stolen from his auto sometime Tuesday night while the car was parked in front of his home. Death Takes Mrs. Robarts, 87, at Dallas Mrs. Emma Whealdon. Robarts, resident of Salem at 190 Salem Heights Ave., for the past 29 years, died Tuesday at a Dallas nursing home at the age of 87 years. Announcement of services will be made later by the Virgil T. Golden Company. Mrs. Robarto was born in Corn wall, England, Dec. 15, 1866, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Matthews. She came to the Unit ed States with her parents in 1872 where her father was an early Northwest pioneer Methodist preacher. She was schooled at Willamette University and Linfield College following her move to Salem in 1925. Her first husband, Joseph Alfred Whealdon preceded her in death in 1917 and she married Wal ter Robarts in 1949. She was a member of the Leslie Methodist Church. Survivors, besides the widower of Salem, includes sons, Rowan Whealdon, North Caldwell. N.J.; .Alfred Whealdon, McMirmville, and Everett Whealdon, Salmon Arm, British Columbia; a foster brother, Roland Mills, Portland; eeven grandchildren end three great grand children. Derthick Heads Northwestern U. Scholarship Won By WU Graduate Merlin Schulze, Willamette Uni versity graduate this week, is the winner of a $1,300 scholarship to the Graduate School of Com merce, Northwestern University. The scholarship covers four quarters of work which Schulze will apply toward a master of business administration degree. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Daniel H. Schulze of Salem. Dr. Schulze is professor of German at Willamette. SUNDAY 'SHUT IN'S DAY Gov. Paul L. Patterson called upon the citizens of Oregon Wed nesday to observe next Sunday as "shut-in's day," and to observe air of this month as "ragweed control month." K. of C. Detectives said the boy told them he had taken a total of about $13 over a period of time and had purchased 25 chickens and some chicken feed with the money.
