Valley News Statesman Newt Service Legioil Plans May 30 Rites At Mill City Statesman News Service MILL CITY At the regular meeting of the American Legion, a nominating committee was ar pointed, consisting of William Westgaard. Election will be May 27. The Legion ha'' will be made available for rental to other serv ice groups for a small fee. it also being open to other activities. Memorial Day services were scheduled for May 30, at 11 a.m., i at Fairview Cemetery, in honor of veterans at whose graves flags will be placed. A firing squad, bugler, and chaplain will take part in the services. Auxiliary Meets MILL CITY The Legion Auxili ary met Monday night with Presi denet Joan Cauble in charge. Dis tribution of Poppy window-cards was made, also plans completed for sale of the ;Poppies on May 27 and 28. Appointed on the nominating committee were Marie Stewart, Martha Barney, and Ethel Ny gaard. A special election meeting was scheduled for Monday evening when delegates to the state con vention in July were to be chocn. Hostesses were Sunny Chance and Anita Becker New Officers Of Jefferson Unit Installed Statesman News Service JEFFERSON The Marion Home Extension unit enjoyed "Outdoor Meals", which was demonstrated and the food prepared by the proj ect leaders, Harriett DeLangh and Doris Robbins at the home of Mrs. Earl Huber. who loaned her patio and fireplace for the occa sion. The chairman, Alice McCoy, pre sided at the afternoon business meeting when officers for 1954-55 were installed by Mrs. Charles Evensizer They were Claudia Strode, president: Grace Clark, rice president; Alice McCoy, secretary-treasurer. An entertaining skit was give:, by Lillie Albertson and Claudia Strode. The district meeting on ' Pre paring Fruits and Vegetables for Freezing" will be held in the Mar lon Farmers Union hall Wednes day afternoon. May 26. at 1:30 o'clock with county agent in charge. Sheridan CHv Budget Higher Statesman News Service SHKRIDAN Sheridan's city budget will show an increase for the 1954-55 fiscal year, but will be within the six per cent limitation. The expenditures for the fiscal year, exclusive of the water de partment, would be $57,392.50. The budget this year is $48,019.12. A new item appearing on the budget will be? the sewer treat ment plant, at $7,100. This amount will be received from the sewer user's charge. Street expenses will be $14,400, the same amount which will be received from state and county road fund taxes. During the next fiscal year, the city will pay off $5,000 on its in debtedness of $15,000 on street paving bonds. The payment is $1,000 higher than for the current year. Canary Fisher and Dorothy Newland. Outdoor Meal Preparation On Program Statesman News Service CLEAR LAKE Eighteen wo men enjoyed an outdoor meal at the meeting of the extension unit Friday. It was held at the home of Mrs. J. E. Whelan. Mrs. George Landrith and Mrs. Jack Chapin, the project leaders, showed how to prepare a coffee can meal and one cooked in foil. Highlight of the business meet ing was installation of officers. Mrs. George Landrith will serve as chairman, Mrs. Paul Loop as vice-chairman, and Mrs. Ted Gi rod as secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Walter Oldenburg was elected program-planning chairman for a three-year term. Guests at the meeting were Mrs. J. E. Whelan, Jr., Mrs. Helen York, and Mrs. S. S. Macklin. A picnic for members and their families is planned for July 16 at the L. J. Chapin home. Turner Women Hurt in Mishaps Statesman Nwi Service TURNER Three Turner wo men were nursing wounds this week as the result of accidents. Mrs. William Kyte had ten stitches taken in her leg at Santi am Memorial Hospital to close a severely cut ankle incurred when she stepped from her car. Mrs. Robert Smith had several stitches taken in her leg, cut on a broken glass, and Mrs. Pauline Smith is away from her post at the State Tuberculosis Hospital be cause of a severe cut on her in dex finger incurred at work. Victim at The Dalles Worked on Detroit Dam Statesman Kews Service MILL CITY -Farrel C. Ball, who was killed recently in an "ac cident connected with construc tion of The Dalles Dam, was the husband of the former Josephine Roy, who graduated from Mill City high school in 1951. The couple lived in Mill City during the time he was employed on the Detroit Dam. Also surviving him is a ten-months-old child. COTTAGE AT CHEMEKETA S. Downing, Former Area Resident, Dies Statesman News Service VICTOR POINT News reached friends here this week of the death of S. H. Downing, Saturday, May 15, at his home near Fresno, Calif. The family lived here in the Mc Alpin community and in Salem for many years until moving to Cali fornia a few years ago to be near relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Downing, who were married in Arkansas ob served their golden weeding aimu versary thirteen years ago while living in Oregon. He 'as born in Pike County, Missouri and was 84 years of age. His health had been poor for several years and had only been bedfast for nine days before his death. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Hanford, Calif. Survivors besides his wife are sons Porter L. and Arthur, of Han ford. Chester of Modesto, daugh ters Mrs. G. L. Woolley (Pearl), Danville. Mrs. Roscoe Woolley (Maude). Fresno, and Mrs. Logan Carter (Opal), San Luis Obispo. There are also a number of grand children and several great grand children. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers at the funeral service. Picnic, Hay Ride Feature At Jefferson Statesman News Service JEFFERSON The Varsity J and friends went on a "hay ride" Tuesday night to Thomas 'creek where swimming and a picnic supper were enjoyed. The third and fourth grade rooms, accompanied by their teachers, Mrs. Irvine Wright and Mrs. Kenneth Zemlicka picnicked at Champoeg Thursday, stopping enroute to visit the state capitol building, and baking company.
