N Tb' i HESH I CANT HEAR 1 1 TUATS ENUPF M Inside TV . . r- ,r Sonny Tufts Signs For Crusoe Cruise By EVE STARR HOLLYWOOD TELETORIAL PREVIEW: Gigantic, grin ning Sonny Tufts has signed on the dotted to do a series of 52 telefilms on the lonely hit ana adventurous times of the famous Robinson Crusoe. This makes us very nappy tor more tender aged televiewers who'll oggle it -. with glee no matter how the job turns out. As for ourselves we re reserving our opinion untu we see how Sonny reacts dramatically to life on a desert isle. Sonny Tufts was a puzzle to us from the first. He popped out into full stardom, teamed with such glittering names as Eleanor Holm in costly color motion pictures. Our closest scrutiny failed to perceive more than a large and rugged frame and a pleasant grin which closed a pair of rather small eyes. As for acting, it simply wasn't there. Our final look, as we recall, was at Sonny as a gym-faced gangster who went down in a shower of lead but not aown in history for the performance. In fact we'd .begun to wonder whether those bullets and the slaughter were real because Sonny could have been dead and planted for all we saw or heard of him thereafter. Until now. He certainly has the build that Robinson Crusoe should have had if he didn't,-, and the demands of adventurous plays like "Ramar of the Jungle" and westerns and the like are never very great on acting ability. So this new series could be highly interesting entertainment for the young fry. So could its pro duction. We actually envy whoever goes along to handle the part of "Friday," especially if the series is shot in or near the original settings. We recall with a great amount of pleasure a lengthy visit to this spot, the Island of Tabago in the West Indies, long before wartime activity permanently altered many adjacent and equally romantic gems like Port of Spain in Trinidad. .If that's the des tination of this budding new production, we'd love to join up and revisit the placid blue Caribbean and the spotless sands and emerald green of Tabago. Whether or not Sonny turns out a good performance there remains to be seen. He's certain to turn up a good time. HOLLYWOOD THE ALL AMERICAN GIRL: Kate Smith has a voice, a personality, and a jine variety on her daily show. Through the years that voice hds remained a rich, effortless pleasure to listen to. She oluvays comes up u-ith a couple of numbers during her hour over NBC every afternoon except weekends. Her sparkling personality permeates the entire 60 minutes even though Kate herself claims but few. She's always just good, wholesome Katie, down to earth, leaning towards the average modest home when she's not actual ly on the rural path. Like her fashion show last Wed nesday. Dorothy Day runs the fashion department, once or twice a week. It's a review of the latest, but none of that $500 per gown stuff, worn today by the elite and carelessly tossed away to morrow. None of those what-holds-it together Harper's Bazaar creations either. Dorothy's models show you what a workingman's wife is wearing, what a small business man's family can afford. Wednesday it included the small fry, this side of the teens, cute little prancers in clothes to match their mommy's. It was sweet, informative and entertaining. A frequent attraction is the clever Alene Dalton, "The Story Princess," who acts out most of her fairy story, narrates it and has acting assistants when required.
