W Coffee prices are soaring, but you can still find a nickel cup of Java if you know where to took. All you have to do is go to one of Bert Mills' mechanical coffee dispen sers, turn a dial to select how you want it served. Drop in a coin and presto there's your five-cent cup of coffee. And if you don't have the right change, the coffee robot will make it for you. You have a choice: black, with su?ar, with cream, or with both. More women take cream than men. Texans like it black and strong. New Englanders want plen ty of cream. In the West and Mid west, cream drinkers outnumber those who take it black by about 2-1. Mills, the man responsible for mechanizing coffee-making, is the Edison of coin-operated machines. A spry and speedy talker of 62, he owns 290 patents on vending ma- Alaska City in ml Two Buildings ANCHORAGE, Alaska Whit tier, the southern port of the Alas ka Railroad, is destined to be come one of the country's unique communities virtually a two building town. The Army Engineers' district of fice has announced plans for a 14-story apartment building. Whittier already is the site of a fabulous military structure which is sometimes known as "a town under one roof." It houses all the tenants service and enter tainment facilities along with bachelor living quarters. Facilities of the "all under one roof" type are adapted to the mil itary shipping terminal because of the limited space where the mountains come down to the shore. There are only about 100 acres of level land available. The new structure will have 177 apartments of 1. 2 and 3 rooms for servicemen and their families and quarters for 39 civil ian bachelors. Corn. Farming Method Tried BLOOMINGTON, 111. (A3) A iew method of farming corn is being tested on a large scale near here by Theodore Funk. It re quires the hooting of anyhyd rous ammonia into the soiL For second year planting, the nitrogen fertilizer is applied without plowing. It is expected to boost yields to 125 bushels of corn per acre. A special mulch planter will be used on 400 acres. It does several jobs at one time. Sweeps 18 inches wide run 9 to 10 inches 'un der the ground to loosen the soil. Fertilizer is applied at that depth. The same machine carries 36-inch sweeps that cut 3 to 4 Inches under the ground and fur ther loosen the soil. A stalk beater shreds all corn stalks. A band of fertilizer is placed at the side of each. Actor Scoffs At Colleagues OMAHA (JP) Movie star Charl ton Heston says: You can't tell by watching an actor in the movies whether or not he is good. You can only tell whether he has been well direct ed. Heston, who has been on the stage and in television as well as the movies, said during a visit here "the actor contributes very little to a movie. On the stage, the story is told with the actor, and the actor is the medium." A good movie director. Heston holds, can take a bad actor and make him appear adequate, at least, on the screen, for the di rector is actually the primary creative artist. Another thing: Heston states he thinks the ac tor's relationship with the audi ence sometimes called empathy is highly overrated. "I can do just as well often better before an empty house," he says. Mishap Leaves Oakclale Youth Partly Paralyzed Statesman News Service OAKDALE Condition of Michael Q'Keefe. 16-year-old son of Mrs. J H. Mundt. who was crititcally injured when a fly wheel of a motor broke while he was helping cut wood, is reported unchanged at Salem Memorial Hospital. Doctors are waiting for the open wound on his spine to heal before operating to find out how seriously his spina cord is in jured. He is .paralyzed from the waist down and is being kept in fraction. His brother, A3C David O'Keefe, who obtained special leave from McChprd Air Base to be near Michael, has obtained a 10-day extension to his lerve. chines and mechanisms. They range from weigh-yourself scales to juke boxes, slot machines, cigar ette vendors and beverage-by-the-bottle dispensers. The national mid-morning and mid-afternoon coffee break is just the situation Mills thirsts to cash in on. There's a Dayton, Ohio, pub lishing company that weekly dis penses 45,000 nickel cups of coffee to its employees, all from coffee bars made by Mills. It's part of the billion cups of coffee he estimates his 15,000 coi fee vendors will deliver this year, half of them at five-cents each. He foresees the day 100,000 cof fee machines will serve America's favorite brew in factories, offices, hotels, bus depots and railway trains. Need Aroma But Bert isn't quite satisfied with the gadget. He's trying to figure a way the aroma of brewing coffee can shoot out of the machine and entice customers to spend coins in it. "I think the number of cups dis pensed by these machines would shoot sky-high if it could be done," he said. Today's instant coffees lack the rich aroma of ground coffee brewed in a pot, coffee-maker or perculator. Mills says scientists and food engineers are working on this one, but nothing has been de veloped synthetically to imitate the real thing. He figures it's like selling roasted peanuts. More people would buy them if they could smell them roasting. Mills inherited his knack with a coin machine from his father, M. B. Mills, who founded a coin ma chine manufacturing business in Chicago in 1894. "I guess I was raised on coin machines instead of a bottle," Mills says, chuckling. Gambling Device Among the first machines his dad built was a gambling device called a "trickle" coin machine. Popular at the turn of the century, you'd put a penny in a slot on the side of the device and tap it with your finger. It would trickle down a series of nail studs and find its way to win or lose you a stick of candy or chewing gum. Mills devised his first coin-operated machine in 1912. It was a scale that gave honest weight for a penny. Many still are in use today. The Mills coin-machine factory, meanwhile, turned out thousands of slot machines, known to everyone as one-varmed bandits. "For 35 years I laid out the per centages on slot machines. The av erage machine paid out about 85 per cent. The machine usually beat the player because he didn't take his winnings and walk away. He foolishly played it back, trying for the jackpot. Eventually the ma chine will take you," Mills says. Three years ago the slot machine business was curtailed because a federal law prevents sending them across state lines. Mills refers to the passing of the slots as though a page from a calendar had been torn away. Music Machine Mills owns 30 patents on the first coin-operated music machine of its kind a combination violin-player piano. It was popular in the years from 1910 through the '20's. They were produced in volume as early as 1912. Mills perfected a method of cutting the player rolls, designed a gadget to make the violin vibrate and another one to keep it in tune. "It has been 24 years since they were last made, but some of them still are playing today. Of course, the player rolls are a bit patched with tape, but they earn a good profit for their owners," he said. The first Mills juke boxes were seen about 1904. They played wax cylinders. Customers wound them with a crank after putting a coin in the machine. Mills improved it in 1915 and brought out the first au tomatic amplified juke box in 1928. A "Ferris wheel" held the rec ords. As the selection moved into position, a tone arm set itself on the revolving record. Mills, then with Mills Novelty Co. invented the first coin-operated soft drink dispenser in 1935. Mills Novelty changed its name in 1943 to Mills Industries because its owners didn't think the word novelty properly described the bus iness. Mills Industries still manu factures ice cream and soft drink vending machines. Mills set up Bert Mills Corp. in 1944, and sold his interest in MMs Industries. He developed his coffee machine in 1946 and showed it a year later at a Chicago coin machine trade show Lousy Coffee "Everybody laughed." he said. "It worked all right, but the coffee was lousy. It finally broke us. ' We contracted to produce the machines and had delivered sever al hundred of them. After they were put in service, the machines clogged up because the system of mixing hot water, powdered coffee, powdered cream and granulated sugar was undependable. "We took the machines back and remodeled them for half the cost of the machinr.. We went in the hole about $165,000," Mills said. But Mills isn't one to be down for long. He licked the coffee mix ing problem by devising a polished metal bowl in which the hot water could swirl as it mixed with ingre dients. With borrowed capital of $3,000, he rented an old building in Lom bard. 111., and was soon in business again. Three years ago he again was paying Uncle Sam a sizable income tax. Last November he moved his firm into new quarters in St. Charles. "We made $1,600,000 before tax es last year. he says proudly. ' TV Realism Overdone GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. OrganActs as Radio Set NEWPORT, Ark. (JP) Mrs. J. A. Gregory was practicing on the organ at St Paul's Episcopal Church here when, suddenly, a voice boomed out of the instru ment. "I got to thinking about all the funerals I had played for," said Mrs. Gregory, "and it scared me plenty." Investigation showed that the organ's amplifier had acted as a receiver to pick up an amateur radio broadcast Stock Market At New High NEW YORK UP Profit-taking poised a brief threat to the stock market this week, but it recovered strongly and moved on to new heights. One rather pronounced dip was met with an equally strong recov ery later, and the performance of the market as a whole was a dem onstration of basic strength. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks gained 40 cents, the third straight weekly advance, and closed at $124.00. Wheat Prices Still Dropping CHICAGO Ufi An improving wheat crop which will soon reach maturity hung heavily over the bread grain dealings on the Board of Trade this week. Wheat prices continued to slump. The bie break, however, came in old crop soybeans. They, lost 13 to 14 cents on top of losses of 15 4 to 18 V cents last week. Their drop disturbed the new crop months, which 4 to 5 cents. i Feed grains had a mixed pattern. but they did better than the other grams in trading which never be came very active. Wheat ended the 'week V-3 lower, corn . lower to 2 cents higher, oats H lower to 3 higher, rye V4 to 1 cent higher and lard 60 cents lower to 90 cents a hun dred pounds higher.
