And though native features are Oriental, accents are predominant ly New England heritage of Mas sachusetts pioneers who settled the island chain more than a century ago. Before World War II, the popula tion of the . islands was around 5,000. Men Oped from the fertile ocean and the lush island fields. There's not much farming done today, but the fishermen still put to sea in colorful outriggers, and depend on the American Navy for the rest of their supplies. American Names Although the natives look like Japanese, most of them carry names like Savory. Washington, Robinson and Gilley, which mark their antecedents almost as strong ly as their broad A's( twangy Eng lish and the name of Chichi Jima's principle settlement, Yankeetown. The Bonins the name is the cor ruption of a Japanese term mean ing "empty of men" was convert ed into an impregnable fortress by the Japanese, who closed the island group 500 miles south of Tokyo to the rest of the world in 1935. Caves, tunnels with vault-type doors, and fortifications ringing Chichi Jima's deepwater Lloyd Harbor have con vinced some military men that Iwo Jima, which cost the United States 2X1.000 casualties, would have been a picnic by comparison. Taken Peacefully Actually, Chichi Jima was taken over peacefully in December. 1945. Advancing American units by passed it while the war was on. The accepted theory was that the island was readied for use as a refuse for the Japanese imperial family and state papers if the war went badly on the homeland. War did come to the Bonins. however, in 1944. when one U. S. air raid alone lasted 14 hours with one break of 20 minutes. By that time most of the island population had been evacuated to the Japan ese home islands and only a few fishermen remained to lupply troops. Through the years since 1830, when Nathaniel Savory of New Bedford, Mass., led the original white settlers to the islands, Japan ese schools, intermarriage and cus toms have had their influence on the inhabitants. But they were nev er able to erase the Western in fluence. Celebrated July 4th Japan annexed the Bonins in 1875 but for generations Yankee de scendants on the islands secretly celebrated the 4th of July. During World War II those who had not been sent to Japan cheered from underground shelters as American bombardiers did their best to level Japanese fortifications. Three years ago. the islanders petitioned the United States for citizenship, an appeal acknowl edged "with deep interest and ap preciation" but little more. Japan wants the islands there are three large ones although Chichi Jima is the only one inhabited now returned to her. At the moment, the island eco nomy is just about what it was when old Nathaniel Savory and his hardy pioneers landed there. Fish is marketed cooperatively through the Island Trading Company and each family purchases its necessi ties through the company. Council Rales It is governed by a council, under Navy supervision. Everything on this and. except for each family's plot of ground and small truck garden, is community-owned wood, fruit, wild hogs and goats. Police Chief Wilson Savory, old Nat's grandson, sets a day when everyone can gather wild oranges. He also gives permission to cut bamboo and go hunting and hunt ers must give away three-quarters of their kill for distribution among the islanders. There are three major problems on the islands: A fast-growing shrub-like tree introduced by the Japanese for camouflage which is fast taking over arable soil: the giant African snail, brought to the island as an emergency food sup ply but multiplying too fast for comfort, and matrimony. Closel- Related The business of finding suitable mates is a tough one because so many of the inhabitants are closely related The Navy finally allowed young men to go to Japan to find wives, but as no Japanese male may. under Navy regulations, imi grate to the islands, girls of mar riagable age find the future bleak. One American sailor wanted to marry a Chichi Jima girl, but was transferred. He's reportedly on his way back to the islands as a civil ian to marry the girl. The occupying force of Ameri cans consists of three naval offi cers and 14 enlisted men. All ex cept three have their wives and children with them. It's an isolated spot with two radio contacts a day from Guam, a visit from a small cargo ship every three weeks, and a once-a-month visit from a seaplane en route to or from Japan. The Navy's job is to maintain Wheat Prices Keep Sliding CHICAGO UP) With the har vest now rapidly approaching in the southwest, wheat prices con tinued to slide downward on the Board of Trade this week. Wheat carried rye down with it and the brown cereal sold at the lowest price in about 11 years. Wheat closed the week 6 to 10 cents lower, corn tt-1 H higher, oats 4 lower, rye 4 4-5 v4 low er, old crop soybeans 4 i-9 V high er, new soybeans S 4-4 4 lower and lard 10 cents to 12.10 a hun dred pounds lower. Lloyd Harbor as a fleet anchorage and to supervise the islanders. There are indications, however, the United States may consider the is lands as a possible advance sub marine fcfase. National Protection Since 1951, the commanding offi cer and executive officer have been submarine men and submarines coming to or leaving Japan stop off there. Natural defenses, not ably the sharp cliffs and deep water of the harbor, make the bonins a natural for such pur poses. Navy men, aided by the island ers, are busy maintaining electri cal, water and refrigeration sys tems, building roads,- operating a garbage collection route, radio sta tion, hospital, school, weather sta tion, recreation hall and supervis ing the building of homes for the islanders. Life in the Bonins today is not much different froan what it was a century ago except that the U. S. flag now flies unchallenged. Ceremony Due For Pioneers Of Dirigible ATLANTIC CITY (INS) A special ceremony in honor of the aviatiph pioneers and their gray kitten mascot who made the his toric first attempt to cross the ocean by air in the 228-foot dir igible "America" will be held next October 15 at Atlantic City. That date in 1910, the "Amer ica" took off from Atlantic City for Europe with a crew under the command of Captain Walter Wellman. Chief Engineer Melvin Vaniman took with him a gray kitten. Although the dirigible set a rec ord for a sustained flight of 1, 008 miles, the "America' was forced down at sea due to me chanical trouble. A steamship rescued the crew and mascot, carrying them to a triumphal welcome in New York City. The airship, which had been built in Paris and flown by Captain Welloian on polar expeditions, 1907-1909, drifted away and was never seen again. It was the first aircraft to carry wireless equipment. Stock Market Surges Ahead NEW YORK (jf Stocks surged ahead in a major bull market ef fort this week and established new high records. On one day the market made its greatest advance for any session of the past two years. At the end of the past week it was at the best levels of the past 24 years. The boost ahead was given by good earnings reports and increas ed dividend payments. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was ahead $1.90 on the week, one of the better gains of the year. At the close on Friday it stood at $121.70. a new high for the year and the best level for the average since April 26, 1930. FUN IS EXPENSIVE SPOKANE, Wash.
