LEE'S ELECTRIC 3380 Lancaster Phone 2-6553 afraid that actresses are going to lose their time-honored place in motion pictures unless writers start coming up with some good lovp stories and soon. Edward Dmytryk, who recently completed "The Caine Mutiny," says that the most desirable for mat for a good actress is a love yarn, and there just aren't any around these days. One prime reason for the short age of good love stories, Dmytryk says, is that the war produced a new school of "realistic"' writers who seem to find very little room for women in their jottings. The director isn't arguing with pictures like "The Caine Mutiny," "From Here to Eternity" and "The Cruel Sea," but: "What are our Garsons, deHav illands and Wymans going to do for star material? . . . Why, even Joan Crawford has had to des cend to suspense movies for the lack of a good love story." "When a movie maker starts casting, his first question is what male star he can get. He knows darned well he'll have no trouble getting a top feminine star. They are starved for material of any kind, much less truly great stor ies." A consequence of this condi tion, Dmytryk says, is that there are no young female stars rising to take the place of the Garbos because they have no real chance to develop their talents. The stress placed on sex, as well as realism, in motion pic tures today is another factor that operates against many good act resses, says Dmytryk adding: "Hollywood has proven it can make good and entertaining pic tures for a Burt Lancaster, a Bo gart or a Brando. And in the sex department, Monroe and Gardner are doing fine. "But we must find some movies for DeHavilland Garson, Wyman and our other really great act resses so they won't have to play second fiddle in movies where the real stellar parts are 'for men only'."
