Capital Unit Honors Past . Presidents A large group of past presidents were guests of Capital Unit, Amer ican Legion Auxiliary Monday eve ning at the Woman's Clubhouse. Gifts were presented each hon ored guest and each was asked to tell about the highlight experi ence of her year as president. Ronnie Potts played several piano numbers and Mrs. David Cameron sans, accompanied by Mrs. Earl Andrescn. A short business meeting pre sided over by Mrs. T. J. Brabec, president of the unit, consisted of announcements of coming events. Mrs Leon Brown announced that plans are being made for the tea honoring candidates for Girl's State. Mrs Jennie Bartlett said there will be no meeting of the Past Presidents parley in April, but there will be a meeting in May. Contest Wlnnm Mrs. Lucas G. Vogt. Poppy Poster chairman, announced the winners of the Poppv Poster awards contest for which Miss Antoinette Kuzmanich. Donald Swanson and Don Bunse were judges. Winning pupils in Class I. 4th. fth and 6th grades' were Gary Dill. 1st: Beth Goodman. 2nd: and Patricia Ann Kelsh. 3rd. In Class II the winners in the Junior grades were Lynne Conklin 1st: Betty Knepper, 2nd; Thomas Haynes, 3rd. Pupils winning honorable men tion were Sharon Kreieer. Sylvia Smith. Dean Hudson, -lim Calla han. .Julie Repine. Linda Bleckert. Ann Shryock. all of Class I In Class II those reccivins honor able mention were Conrad Weath ers and Conrad DeHut. Co-chairman with Mrs. Lucas on thp Poppy Poster committee was Mrs. James Delaney of Salem Unit No. 136. Mrs. Emily Bauer of Independ ence was a guest. During the social hour Mrs. T. J. Brabec and Mrs. Glenn Holman presided at the coffee urns. At the next regular meeting on May 3 the unit will honor Gold Star and War Mothers. Lester Kcllar. principal of the Woodburn High School, gave a talk on "Youth, their problems, behavior and how adults can try to understand them." The next meeting will be a mother-daughter tea at the home of Mrs. Karl Engelman of Butte ville. The two girls winning the "Good citizenship" awards at the Woodburn and the North Marion high schools, will be present with ' their mothers. Rep. Neuberger Speaks HUBBARD Mrs Maurine Neuberger, state representative from Multnomah county, will be speaker for the Marion county Federation of Woman's clubs spring meeting in Detroit, April 30. Arrangements for the speak er were made by Mrs. Cobie de Lespinasse of Hubbard, vice president of the federation. Mrs. Neuberger is being honored this year as one if the four Oregon Women of Achievement by the Matrix table dinner in Portland, April 29 for her "legislative lead ership." The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Louise: Wainwright of Riverside and the groom is the sen cf Mrs. A. E. Largent of Salem. The couple will live in Riverside. Jack Largent Takes Bride In South Prom Riverside. Calif, comes news of the marriage of Miss Gwen Wainwright. daughter of Mrs. Louisa Wainwright of River side, to Jack L. Largent, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Largent of Salem, on April 12. The ceremony was performed at the First Bap tist Church at 8 o'clock by the Rev. Ralph R. Shirk. The bride wore a white satin ballerina gown with Chantilly lace bolero and a fingertip veil caught to an orange blossom headdress. She carried white carnations and boOvardia centered with a purple orchid Pete Wainwright gave his sister in marriage. Miss Kathy McCafferty was the honor maid and sHe wore a yellow ballerina dress of net and lace over taffeta with matching hat. Miss Dorothy Atkisson was the bridesmaid and she wore a lav ender ballerina dress of net and lace over taffeta with matching hat They carried carnation bou quets of white, lavender and yel low. Mrs. James Gabriel and Miss Nancy Hodges lighted the candles. Vernon C. Bell, the bride's brother-in-law, was best man. Ushers were James Gabriel and Tom Wainwright. the bride's brother. A reception followed in the church parlors. The newlyweds drove north to Salem to spend their honeymoon. They will return to Rivtrside to reside, where Mr. Lafgent is sta tioned at March Field with the U. S. Air Force. Elliott Prairie A shower was given in the community hall Sat urday afternoon with Mrs. Glenn Losey Jr. as the honor guest. I orty guests were present. Mrs. Lester Rautenberg, the honor guest's mother, and Mrs. Glenn Losey Sr.. poured. Mrs. Frank Crandall, Mrs. Ben Burkert and Mrs. Ray Baker served the ices. Mrs. W. A. Lottis, who traveled on the gospel ship. "The Willis Shank", up the coast of Brit ish Columbia into Alaska last fall, working with boys and girls in the towns along the way, will speak and show pictures of the trip. A model Good News Club class will be taught by Mrs. Ruben Imig, former director of Child Evangelism in the city of Salem. Special music will include an ac cordion duet by Mrs. Jack Uqiring and Mrs. Pete Becker, and Mrs. Paul Barnett will have charge of the devotions. The tea arrange ments are being made by Mrs. Paul Geil. There will be a nursery for small children and all interested are in vited to attend. Sunshine Club Meets SPRING VALLEY Mrs. George Hammond and her sjster, Mrs. Alice Updegraff. were hostesses at a dessert luncheon Wednesday honoring the Spring Valley Sun shine club at the Hammond home. Mrs. Ben McKinney, president, conducted the ' meeting, when plans were completed for a bene fit card party, April 30 at Spring Valley school house. Mr. and Mrs. Ben McKinney and Mr. and Mrs. George Hammond will arrange the affair. Four Corners Jackie Johnston celebrated his eleventh birthday anniversary on April 10. Omiwfes Dyer-Michalis Nuptials Read Mr. and Mrs. Frank Michalis of Portland are announcing the mar riage of their daughter, Betty Jean, to Robert Keith Dyer Jr.; son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Dyer of Salem, which was quietly sol emnized on April 17 at Stevenson, Wash. After May 15 the newlyweds will be at home in Gardiner. Oregon, where Mr. Dyer is with the Long Bell Lumber Co. The new Mrs. Dyer attended Oregon State College and has been with the West Coast Lumber Co. in Portland. Mr. Dyer is a gradu ate of Salem Schools and served in the Army for three years. Rainbow Girls Make Visit MILL CITY A group of Chad wick Assembly, Rainbow Girls from Salem, including the wor thy advisor and associate advisor visited Marilyn Assembly. Order of Rainbow for Girls at the lodge hall Wednesday evening. Robert Draper, worshipful mas ter of the Masonic Lodge, rAF & AM, was introduced. PJans were made for the banquet to be given for their secret Masonic "fathers" on Wednesday, April 28, after which the initiatory degree will be exemplified. The May 12 meeting will honor the mothers with a 7 o'clock des sert and entertainment. Election of officers will follow. About 14 girls plan to attend grand assembly at Baker in June, going by chartered bus, accord ing to the mother advisor, Mrs. V. B. Shuey. Jan Ross of Marilyn Assembly has been chosen a member of the grand choir dur ing grand assembly. Spinsters were entertained Mon day night at the home of Miss Marjorie Becke. Plans were made for the group's annual silver tea to be held later in the spring with Miss Becke as general chairman. Reports on the recent benefit fash ion luncheon were also given. At the May 3 meeting there will be election of officers. Job's Daughters met Monday evening at the Scottish Rite Temple with the junior Bethel officers in the chairs. A tribute to Mrs. Eldon Cone, guardian, was presented by the daughters and associate guardian, Morse Stewart. Mrs. Earnest Yeo of Gladstone, junior past grand guardian of Oregon, was present and ex pressed her thanks to the Bethel for their work at Grand Session. Miss Nancy Weeks who was chosen Grand Representative to the state cf Montana, was intro duced. Miss Julie Peterson, in behalf of the drill team, presented the third prize ribbon for novelty drills to Miss Susan Youngquist, honored queen and the Bethel. Refreshments were served to the girls after the meeting by Miss Betty Aston, with the prize money she won for naming the Capitol Sessions. The next meeting, May 3. will be Friendship night with Bethels 34. Independence-Monmouth and 43 and 48 of Salem invited. There will also be formal initiation. Conrad Hofstedt is master itof ceremonies and Mrs. Alldon Rockwell is assisting. Sixth grade girls will have a candy sale, which the room mothers are pro viding. This is the only benefit project sponsored by the associa tion this year. Officers Are Nominated Nomination of officers high lighted the business meeting of the West Salem Lions Auxiliary Monday night at the home of Mrs. Chester McCain.
