V" Cancer Cases Slowed Down Statesman, Salem, Or- Sun April 4, 1954 Sec. IV 3 By Cortisone py RENNIE TAYLOR AP Science Reporter SAN FRANCISCO I A medi cal treatment which gives pros tatic cancer patients a little longer time to live without having to und ergo "last resort" surgery was re ported Friday by a University of California urologist. The treatment, which; consists of large doses of cortisone, inac tivates the adrenal glands. This in turn prevents the adrenals from producing hormones which the cancer needs for vigorous growth. There is one other way to do this removal of the adrenals by surgery. But the operation is a risky one with a relatively high death rate, said Dr Frank Hin man Jr.. who devised the chemical alternative. Prolongs Lives Dr. Hinman told science writers that the medical procedure had prolonged the lives of eight out of ten patients for an average of 82 days. In six of the eight patients there was some shrinkage of the cancer. By comparison. Dr. Hinman said adrenal surgery on groups of pa tients in three tests elsewhere had prolonged life even more but they had to undergo the risk of the operation, in one of these groups only 20 of 26 patients survived the operation, he said. In all of Dr. Hinman s patients the cancer - stricken men had been castrated and then treated with a female sex hormone to counteract adrenal production of the male sex hormone which pro motes the malignant growth. Female Hormone The cortisone treatment isuse ful only after castration and fe male hormone administration. Even when it fails, surgical re moval of the adrenals offers the possitSUv of still further extension of life, hr. Hinman said. A method of detecting cancer in the thyroid gland by precise meas urement of the amount of a hor mone execreted in urine was re ported by Dr. Peter Forsham. of the university's metabolic unit. This is done by doing a patient with ACTH, the pituitary hormone. H the thyroid gland is non-cancerous, it will be stimulated and will increase it output of cortical hor mones, which can be detected in the urine. A cancerous thyroid cannot be stimulated by ACTH. Dr. Forsham said. To Determine Disease The test thus can be determined the difference between thyroid cancer and thyroid enlargement or bening thyroid tumor. Dr. For sham added. This may be used to tell at early stage whether a pa tient with an abnormal thyroid should have an operation or should seek medical treatment. The same test also might be adapted to suspicious abnormali ties in other glands such as the ovaries and the male sex glands., Dr. Forsham said. The science writers are touring research centers under the spon sorship of the Americi Cancer Society. Walt Disney Enters TV HOLLYWOOD (Jfi Walt Disney entered television Friday. Rombongh (NJ)., D.C) 1515 State St Health Talk ???? Someone said, "How does it nappen that little column is en titled "Health Talk" and it only mentions "disease?" A good ques tion. People do not think of health in terms of sound teeth, pink cheeks, pep, and a full life but rather in terms of symptoms, hard luck, sorrow, and so on. At any party or gathering of peo ple the subject of conversation most often turns to pain, opera tions discomfort Jack, and treat ments. Perhaps this way of think- ing stems from the large num ber .of people today who are on their feet and going but are oah half well most of the time. No matter what ' the cause of this way of ; thinking it is not good, because negative thinking brings only negative action. Be positive in action and think in terms of plenty, peace, rest, tranquility, and health. Remember, Building Health is Better Than Fighting Disease. When needed.
