Council of Churches Readies
For State Council Convocation
The Salem Council of Churches and Council of Church Women
are making final plans for the first annual Convocation of Ministers
and Laymen of the Oregon Council of Churches scheduled in Salem
Feb. 2, 3 and 4. f
Purpose of the convocation, according to Dr. Mark A. Talney
of Portland, executive secretary of the Oregon Council of Churches,
is to brine toeether Christian leaders of all Protestant denominations
for inspiration and instruction and "to determine the tasks confront
ing the Protestant church in today's world." -
Any minister, layman or youtn
of any church is eligible to attend
the convocation, scheduled at the
First Christian church, said Sid
ney Boise, publicity chairman of
the Salem council. Cost is $2 reg
istration fee for the first regis
trant of each church and $1 fee
for each additional registrant of
that church, he explained. Regis
tration forms are available from
local ministers.
Activities during the three-day
meeting will include individual
addresses, panel discussions, ves
per services, council business
meeting and election of officers,
counselling seminars and a ban
quet

ers will include Dr. Henry Hitt
Crane, pastor . of the Central
Methodist church of Detroit,
Mich.; Dr. Ralph Bndgman of the
Court of Domestic Relations, To
ledo. Ohio: Bishop Stephen Bayne
Jr., of the Episcopal Diocese of
Olympia; Gov. Paul L. Patterson;
Charles A. Sprague, publisher,
former governor and representa
tive to the United Nations; Dr.
Paul Means, University of Ore
gon; State Senator Richard Neu
berger of Portland, and Dr. G.
Henry Green, synodical executive
of the Presbyterian Church USA.
Dr. Crane, who is scheduled to
open the convocation with his ad
dress "The Modern Relevance of
Protestant Principles," was an al
ternate delegate to the World
Council of Churches gathering in
Amsterdam in 1948. He has held
his Detroit pastorate since 1938.
Dr. Bridgman, who is chief
marriage counsellor for the Court
of Domestic Relation in Toledo,
will give the address following
the installation of officers for the
Oregon Council He will also con
duct counselling seminars.

hold a fellowship meeting Mon

to attend the meeting which will
include a covered dish dinner.

A 10-day series of evangelistic
services will get underway at the
Calvary Baptist church Sunday
evening and will continue1 each
evening except Saturday through
Feb. 3.
The Rev. and Mrs. Emit Gav-
erluk, evangelists with the Ore-i
gon and Washington Baptist Con
vention, will conduct the 'meet
ings. Evangelist Gaverluk is an ex
cellent chalk artist and an ac
complished violinist Special
lighting and musical effects in
connection with his drawings will
be featured each evening along
with violin music and the singing
of Mrs. Gaverluk. i
This Sunday Mr. Gaverluk
speaks in the morning service on
"What Do You Expect From Your
Religion?" His topic at night will
be "The World's Only Hope."
Monday has been specified as
Men's Night when the I men's
quartet will sing, Tuesday as Sun
day School Night, Wednesday will
be Church Night, Thursday is to
be Women's Night and Friday
will be Youth Night
The Rev. Tillman Houser, son
of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Houser of
Salem, is home on leave follow
ing six years missionary duty in
Southern Rhodesia. j

wife and two young sons are vis
iting his parents at 670 N.

spend a year in the states, trav
eling and lecturing, and then will
return to Southern Rhodesia. )
The missionary family will be
honored in a homecoming serv
ice at the Free Methodist Church
Sunday evening at 7:30. j
He is a missionary of the Free
Methodist Church. His job was
supervisor of missionary schools
over a large area in the southeast
part of Southern Rhodesia near
the Portuguese East African bor
der. I
In his traveling around the 1
rugged country he has had many
experiences with African animals
and has brought home several
trophies. As a boy in Salem he
was a Statesman carrier and la
ter graduated from Seattle Pa
cific College at Seattle, Wash. I

Methodist Church. Later he will
visit churches in surrounding val
ley towns and then will travel
over the United States.

Salvationi Army's Western Terri
torial Training College will con

corps Sunday morning.

All members of the group are

vocal and instrumental numbers

present tour the group will visit
five other Oregon cities and hold
some 20 meetings.

full-dress Party Congress would
be held Feb. 25 in Sofia. The an
nouncement said that important
changes of the Bulgarian Com
munist Party's constitution, would
be "discussed." A new central
