A-. 12 -The Statesman, Salem, Oregon, Saturday, Jan. 23 1954 Council of Churches Readies For State Council Convocation The Salem Council of Churches and Council of Church Women are making final plans for the first annual Convocation of Ministers and Laymen of the Oregon Council of Churches scheduled in Salem Feb. 2, 3 and 4. f Purpose of the convocation, according to Dr. Mark A. Talney of Portland, executive secretary of the Oregon Council of Churches, is to brine toeether Christian leaders of all Protestant denominations for inspiration and instruction and "to determine the tasks confront ing the Protestant church in today's world." - Any minister, layman or youtn of any church is eligible to attend the convocation, scheduled at the First Christian church, said Sid ney Boise, publicity chairman of the Salem council. Cost is $2 reg istration fee for the first regis trant of each church and $1 fee for each additional registrant of that church, he explained. Regis tration forms are available from local ministers. Activities during the three-day meeting will include individual addresses, panel discussions, ves per services, council business meeting and election of officers, counselling seminars and a ban quet Speakers and discussion lead ers will include Dr. Henry Hitt Crane, pastor . of the Central Methodist church of Detroit, Mich.; Dr. Ralph Bndgman of the Court of Domestic Relations, To ledo. Ohio: Bishop Stephen Bayne Jr., of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia; Gov. Paul L. Patterson; Charles A. Sprague, publisher, former governor and representa tive to the United Nations; Dr. Paul Means, University of Ore gon; State Senator Richard Neu berger of Portland, and Dr. G. Henry Green, synodical executive of the Presbyterian Church USA. Dr. Crane, who is scheduled to open the convocation with his ad dress "The Modern Relevance of Protestant Principles," was an al ternate delegate to the World Council of Churches gathering in Amsterdam in 1948. He has held his Detroit pastorate since 1938. Dr. Bridgman, who is chief marriage counsellor for the Court of Domestic Relation in Toledo, will give the address following the installation of officers for the Oregon Council He will also con duct counselling seminars. His job was supervisor of missionary schools over a large area in the southeast part of Southern Rhodesia near the Portuguese East African bor der. I In his traveling around the 1 rugged country he has had many experiences with African animals and has brought home several trophies.
