Smorgasbord To Feature Art: Display , (Pictures on Page 1) A new feature to be introduced at the 8th annual YM-YW Smor gasbord and Festival of Nations Tuesday evening at the YMCA is the display of foreign travel post ers collected especially : for the event by Palmer Sather, Mr. Sa ther's various airlines and steam ship companies were pressed in to service last week and obliging-, ly produced a brilliant harvest containing work of some of the world's most noted commercial artists. Netzler from Sweden, Arthur Burgess of England, Willi Hoff man of Austria, and the famous Schell of Belgium are among the painters whose work is represent ed. Dede, the Belgian photograph er has ar striking black and white, and I. B. Magnusson of Scotland - has arranged a colored photo of a wee house by a blue mirror loch in a surprising contemporary design that takes you straight away to the bonnie banks and braes. Beautiful Posters The Danish water color post ers are an example of peerless technique with the medium, as well as bold and exciting designs. These depict scenes from Spain, Africa, Denmark and Europe. The wise little fox on the Aust rian poster by Hoffman is a good example of air brush painting, i and the Ruins of Lindos at j Rhodes, from Greece by an artist : who signs only Nenna C. was done in temera, as was the Jap anese poster. "Kashmir , Calling" printed in India is perhaps the most roman- j tic of the group. Its mountains j are glowing purples, pinks and j blues tempered with deep greens. All the posters bear the imprint of their publishers, such as the Governments of India, Belgium and Britain, as well as the print ers with their notes of offset method, lithograph or printing. The 'YMCA lobby will be fur ther made festive by Ardo Tarem - and the indefatigible efforts of the Y's Men's Club to bring com plete cross sections of the cul ture of the countries exhibiting this year. Examples of book print ing and binding, jewelry, carving and sculpture, costumes and na tional flags will be found? The costumes will be worn by dress mannequins such as grace the windows of Salem stores. Festive Decorations The YMCA gymnasium, scene of, the actual Smorgasbord, will be decked out in the huge flags of scores of nations where Y work is fostered. The guest tables will sport miniatures of the same world wide flags, and the serving tables will be decorated with fresh flowers and greens by Mrs. Willard Thompson, chair man of decorations, and her com mittee: Mesdames Arthur Ather ton, Kenneth Sherman, Glen Fravel, Joseph Felton and Rich ard Upjohn. The Smorgasbord event, com plete with an extensive program of music and dancing will begin at 5 o'clock and run continuously until 8 pjn. so that all who at tend may be served and enjoy one complete show without the need for reservations. The pub lic is invited to attend. Blind between 2:30 and 6 p.m. Proceeds from the affair will be used to complete the Mrs. Walter A. Denton mem orial award fund at Willamette University. The interested public is invited to attend the musical program and tea. Students of Federated Music Club teachers will present half- hour programs at intervals dur ing the afternoon. Assisting will be Miss Jane Gray, a senior mus ic student at .Willamette Univer sity, the second recipient of the .memorial award fund. Miss Gladys Blue of Salem received the first award in 1952. The memorial award fund was established by the Salem Feder ated Music Clubs in honor of Mrs. Denton, a graduate of Wil lamette University in 1890 and in special recognition of her loy alty to Willamette, her interest in students of music and her de votion to music as an art The award is given to a senior music student at Willamette Univers ity majoring in piano, who has been fiithful to the interests and standards of the school of music, has shown creditable perform ance and plans to make a career in music. It is hoped that sufficient money will be cleared at the sec ond matinee musicle to reach the $1000 goal. The interest from this invested money each year becomes an award. Presiding at the tea urns dur ing the afternoon will be Mrs. Paul L. Patterson, Oregon's first lady, Mrs. Walter Snyder, Mrs. F. R. Hunter, Portland, state pres ident of the Oregon Federation of Music Teachers, Mrs. Mary L. Craig, Portland, state vice-president, Mrs. Walter Dry and Mrs. Everett Cox.
