Cancer, Heart
-Diseases Get
More Attention
Diseases common among old
people, like cancer and heart dis
eases, get increasing attention in
public health programs because
people are living longer now, it
was noted in Salem Thursday by
Dr. R. H. Wilcox of the State
Board of Health staff.
Summarizing Oregon's public
health program since its start
as a department of state govern
ment 50 years ago. Dr. Wilcox
told Salem Lions Club at a Mar
ion Hotel luncheon that the aver
age life span is about 20 years
longer now than it was a half
century ago.
One big mark of health prog
ress over the 50 years, said tha
doctor, is better, tuberculosis con
trol. He said tuberculosis dropoed
from the list of the top 10 killing
diseases last year for the first
time. ! , .
