Swenson, Portland, collided with an auto operated by Elizabeth Schaber, 4831 Bailey Rr.f when the Swenson car pulled out of a parking space in the 1500 block of Center Street Thurs day afternoon, city police re ported. Escapee From State Hospital Apprehended The freedom of Bret Brault, about 25, was short-lived Thurs day when he escaped from the Oregon State Hospital but he was blamed by residents of northeast Salem for several inci dents which took place during that time. State and city police joined with authorities of the hospital and quickly apprehended him in an orchard northwest of Hoover School at 3 p.m., about 30 min utes after his escape. In the interim police were told that a man took mail from a box in front of 1235 Icel St., tore it in small pieces and discarded it Postal employes picked up the mail and returned it to the owner. Later, police recefved the re port that a rock had been thrown through a window at 2645 Engle wood Ave. A window of a car be longing to Mrs. W. W. Stiffler, 2870 Bolton Blvd.. was broken while she was visiting Mrs. Al bert Hilke, 3183 Moody Ave. Mrs. Hilke explained that "a man came down the road carry ing a club and hit the window." Pratt, resident of Salem for 38 years, died at a Salem hospital Thursday after noon at the age of 82 years. She was born March 19, 1871, at Hamilton, N. Y and was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Dorward. Rev. Dorward held Baptist pastorates in the Middle West and later in Cali fornia and Oregon. Mrs. Pratt taught school in Iowa before her marriage to Parke C. Pratt March 19, 1895. Mr. Pratt preceded her in death in 1949. The couple moved to California from Minnesota in 1903 and later moved to Oregon in 1915. Mrs. Pratt was a loyal worker in the Baptist church and was especial ly active in Children's work. She was a charter member of the Cal very Baptist Church in Salem where she served as deaconess, Sunday School teacher and cra dle roll director. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Willma Wright, librarian at Parrish Junior High School, and Mrs. Clyde Beard, The Dalles; two grandchildren. Mrs. Philip Comfort, Stockton, Calif., and Donald Beard, The Dalles. A son. Dorward C. Pratt a veteran of World War I, died in 1925. Funeral services will be held Rev. Omar Barth officiating. Salem city officials Thursday opened bids on the annual order of fire hydrants for new and re placement use. The bids will be referred to the City Council. Two firms, Waterworks Supply of Portland and Western Utilities Supply of Seattle, submitted iden tical low bids on hydrants of the same (Mueller) manufacture. This was $106.76 or $117.50 each on different grades of the 4-inch hydrant with 20 to be obtained. On five 5-inch hydrants the low bid was $128.25 or $142.32. H. D. Mrs. Eisenhut, a native of Spokane, Wash., will teach in the second grade at Highland SchooL Boy Scouts Slate Bush's Pasture Fair Salem Boy Scouts and leaders are preparing for a Scouting Ac tion Fair Oct 9-11 at Bush's Pas ture, officials said Thursday as the fall program of Cascade Area Scout Council began to shape up. The "fair" will feature public demonstrations of merit badge skills and pioneering work dur ing the weekend camp to be stag ed by the council's Cherry City district and the Salem Exchange club. Plans for the event will be out lined by Dr. Dominic Callicrate, camping and activities chairman, at the new year's first meeting of the Cherry City District offi cers' roundtable Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in First Methodist Church. Wesley Goodrich is the new dis trict chairman. Other committee chairmen are Dr. Douglas Thomp son, health and safety; Otto Younker, leadership and train ing; Don Crenshaw, advance ment; Dave Holtzman, finance; Floyd Witteman, organization and extension.
