Sign Off Driver Hurt By Collision Verne E. Wikoff, 58, of Salem Route 4, Box 466, was injured in a two-car accident shortly before 5 p. m. Friday at the 12th' Street junction on 99 E, state " police reported. He was taken to Salem Memor ial Hospital where he was treated for a puncture wound on the left arm, bruises and abrasions. He was released later. Police said a car driven by William A. Rohde, Portland, hit the Wikoff car broadside. Both cars were badly smashed and had to be towed away. Rohde ' and his three passen gers were uninjured. First aid men treated Wikoff at the scene. Byrne, chancellor of the State System of Higher Education, an nounced Thursday. He said the credentials would be studied by the university's board of deans and faculty - ad visory council, who will make evaluations to him. Dr. R. E. Kleinsorge, president of the State Board of Higher Edu cation, said earlier this week the board probably will name an act ing president untu a successor, is found to Dr. Harry K. Newburn. Newbura resigned effective Oct. 1 to head an educational television center, in Ann Arbor, Mien. Byrne Indicated a recommenda tion for acting president wiv De ready for board consideration ear ly next month. State Workers Requesting Salary Hikes Requests for salary increases, involving state workers in several state activities, are piling up in the office of the State Civil Serv ice Commission, James Clinton, commission director, said Thurs day. Clinton said these requests are being considered on an indi vidual basis. He attributed the requests largely to recent salary and wage increases for union workers in private industry. The ; commission director said that while some applications for state jobs are being received there is a serious shortase lof stenographers, typists and physi cians in the state institutions. Clinton said the commission had not , vet decided to conduct a salary 'and wage survey involving state workers . prior to tne 1955 legislature. Shortage of workers in the State j Highway Department in volves! largely engineers who have bad experience in road con struction operations. Nurses also are in demand at Oregon's mental institutions, Clinton said. CjValentine, Retired Area Farmer Dies : Clarence Foster Valentine of 2740 $. Summer St died Friday In a Salem Hospital following an illness oi eignt weexs. tie was 83. i Valentine retired from farming 17 years ago and had lived in Salemj since 1920. He was born in Sioux City; Iowa. Nov. 8, 1867, the son of Frank and Caroline Valentine. He lived in Iowa until the age of 28 then moved to Portland. He lived in Baker several years before coming to saiem. July 29, 1899. he married Ivy Mae i Buchanan, : who survives him. The couple observed their 54th ! wedding anniversary last month. Surviving, besides the widow, are seven daughters, Mrs. Frank Toney, Mrs. Henry Kayser, Mrs. F. L. Cotton,, Mrs. Julius Jorgen- sen and Mrs. Jack Henry, all of Salem, Mrs. Albert Klein, Aums ville. and Mrs. Richard Schott hoefer, Stayton; two sons, Wil liam F. Valentine, Salem, and Gerald E. Valentine, Cutler City; sister, Mrs. Helen Webber, Mar- shaltown, Iowa; brother, Frank L. Valentine, Sioux City, Iowa; 39 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be an nounced later by Howell-Edwards Co. . Mary Abney Succumbs to Long Illness Mrs. Mary Ethnel Abney, 67, of Jefferson Route 1, died Friday following a lengthy illness. Mr. and Mrs. Abney have farmed in Jefferson for about the last 10 years. She was a member of Talbot Community Church. The deceased was born Oct 12, 1885 at Battle Creek, Iowa. Surviving are, her widower, Ray R. Abney, Jefferson; five daugh ters, Mrs. Vivian August, Oak hurst, N. J., Mrs. Vernice Taeue. Jefferson, Mrs. Verdell Snoop, Langlois, Mrs. Vera Morton. Jef ferson, and Mrs. Verla Parker, Glen Ellen, Calif.; three sons, Dick and Dean Abney, both of Salem, and Budd Abney, Lang lois; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Vandewalker, and Mrs. Ruby Bicknell, both of Sioux City, Iowa, and Mrs. Clara Marsh, Mapleton, Iowa; one brother. Yamhill Man Drowns' in Lake Mishap McMINNVILLE on Second drowning victin ic Yamhill County in less than a week was Daniel Roy McKinney Jr., McMinnville, who lost his life in Rainbow Lake, 14 miles northwest of here, Thurs day. A companion. Jack Roberts, 18, McMinnville, said the two had been swimming and boating. They were in separate boats, Roberts said, when he heard a splash, and McKinney had vanished. The body was recovered in about 10 feet of water by city firemen. Last Friday. Walter Foster of McMinnville drowned in the South Yamhill River near-Sheridan.
